Interview

Rodion Gilmitdinov

RRRON (Rodion Gilmitdinov) is an American contemporary artist whose creative vision is as diverse and vibrant as the regions that have shaped his life. Born in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, RRRON's early years were infused with the rich cultural tapestry of Central Asia, including the intricate calligraphy and vibrant motifs of the Silk Road. Based in New York and Miami, RRRON continues to draw on his diverse cultural influences to create truly unique works of art. Whether he is blending the calligraphy of Central Asia with the bold colors o Miami's Art Deco architecture, or infusing his car-themed works with the vibrant energy of the New York City skyline.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I was born in the beautiful city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. My journey kicked off with a hefty dose of inspiration from my art-loving dad. I grew up in a home that practically oozed love and support, and my childhood was like a big, colourful adventure. Picture this: laughter echoing through the halls, carpets with stories to tell hanging on the walls, and the smell of freshly baked bread floating in the air. Those were the days of epic sunsets and an atmosphere so warm I can still feel it.”

What inspires you?

“Spirit of anything, it's uncontrollable feeling, you can't predict it. I'm notorious for the details. Nothing is ever planned or pre calculated, unless it's an assignment, or something very specific that I need to make. I'm free, so I guess my biggest inspiration is the spirit.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“I don't strictly adhere to a particular theme, but l enjoy reflecting the essence of who I am-my roots, the places I call home or explore, and the emotions I navigate. As a passionate car enthusiast, I recently crafted something for Ferrari Scuderia Team pilots Leclerc and Sainz. On top of that, being an occasional golfer, it was a true honor to create something uniquely special for none other than Tiger Woods. When it comes to underlying message, my sincere wish is that those who encounter my work discover precisely what they are searching for or find what they may need.”

How would you describe your work?

“I would say that it's a fusion of colors and emotions.”

Which artists influence you most?

“Pollock, Shagal , Bradley Walker.”

What is your creative process like?

“Oh, it's complicated, there's no such thing as protocol or anything like that. As long as I have the "right" or "that feeling" I am creating whatever comes to my mind. It's a train of actions and emotions, I just have to set the direction”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“For many years, artists were showing their interpretation of what's going on in the society, the world. Their opinions in the form of art were and still are different, and it makes you think experience and look at all types of situations from a different perspective. I once attended the exhibition of Maryan. He made me feel to share his pain and I felt throughout his art bursts of anger, peace and wanting to survive, loneliness and his ability to recover from the darkest days in his life during the holocaust.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“I had an amazing exhibition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia gallery Lift.”
