Interview
Jacob Below
Jack Below is a multi-talented artist who has an Associate's Degree in animation, and has graduated the Kubert School of Cartooning and Graphic Art in New Jersey. He is a published artist who has illustrated several books, done painting commissions, created merchandise out of his artwork, and is always on the lookout for new ways to connect with audiences through his art.
What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“I grew up in Western Colorado, and I've had a passion for drawing ever since I was three years old. One of my oldest memories was making one new drawing after another and showing it to them while they were trying to sleep. I've been enchanted with animation and art that moves from my early years of watching classic Disney and Saturday morning cartoons, which convinced me for a long time that I wanted to grow up to be an animator. As the years went on, I've developed passion for art in all different fields, from children's books, to paintings, to comic strips. I've just decided that I wanted to get a little taste in all of it, which I have been fortunate enough to be able to.”
What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?
“Sometimes my works are personal experiments in creating a beautiful image, and sometimes I have the intent to tell a story. In either instance, at the core of all the works I create, my aim is to reach out and connect with as many people as possible. In doing this, what I hope is that my work can bring people together, even in their own small way, and get them to see the beauty in the world the way I do.”
Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?
“I would say my work is half-planned-half-improvised. If ever I see something I want to start out, I want to be sure I have some direction of where I'm going, especially since knowing that helps me to see a project to completion. Plus, whenever I'm representing a real-life subject matter, I will be sure that I have as much visual reference as I need in advance. At the same time, I try to avoid leaning too heavily on my references or direction, because I like to have a sense of my artwork taking on a life of its own. Sometimes, I will envision one thing, and then that vision gives way to an idea for something I can imagine would look stronger in the final product. I believe that creating a work of art that stands out and resonates with audiences, should feel about as organic as raising a child.”
Are there any art world trends are you following?
“I typically avoid following trends in the world, and try to focus on my artwork being timeless. Since trends are always temporary, I believe that learning to evolve and adapt to the ever-changing world, is key to being successful as an artist. The only instances that I do feel compelled to go along with trends, is when I see the potential to connect with new people in a way that would expand my audience.”
What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?
“I am available versatile artist who works in both physical and digital mediums. I do black-and-white ink drawing, pencil/charcoal sketches, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, and scratchboard just to name a few. I also know how to draw and color digitally, and I have animation software. Most of my best work I would say is drawn out by hand, and then colored digitally.”
What does your art mean to you?
“Art is a way of life for me. Not only does a picture speak a thousand words, but it also transcends barriers whether they be related to language, culture, or mental health. Whether it be just creating a pretty picture or telling a story, my artworks are a snapshot in time. That even pertains to my own life, as I feel that the quality of the artwork reflects to some degree the state of mind I was in at the time of creating it.”
What’s your favourite artwork and why?
“I couldn't pin down a favorite work of art. I've stopped trying to long ago, not only because my tastes are constantly evolving, but so are my sources of inspiration. Certain things will always hold a special place in my heart, but I want to strike that proper balance of not letting myself stagnate, which I think is a symptom of limiting my tastes to one thing.”
Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?
“One of my most recent participations was in an event called ‘AniJam,’ hosted by Academy Award-winner Joanna Quinn, which summoned hundreds of animators from all across the world to show their love and support for the children of Palestine.”
