Painting Through Grief - The Delicate Art of Healing After Loss
In a Daydream, Daniela Milinkovich.
Daniela never thought she’d be a widow at 47 years old, but here she is, two months after her beautiful Jeffrey’s death, trying to pick up the pieces of what is left of her shattered world; trying to make sense of it all. The Tuesday after Jeff’s funeral, Daniela sat in the living room and stared out their window. She asked for a sign from him to know that he was there with her.
As the sun set, two bursts of light came through the dark clouds. It was breathtaking, and she knew in her heart that it was him reaching out to her. Daniela imagined that instead of being alone in their living room, they were together again, on a beach somewhere watching that sunset. She cried for a long time as the light faded into darkness. She’s not sure how much time passed before she realized that she was sitting in a completely dark room.
It took Daniela a while to start painting again. She set up her canvas a couple weeks after Jeff passed, but she couldn’t bring herself to take the next step. Two months later, she sat down and stared at her blank canvas for a bit. She began painting the sky that she saw that Tuesday evening. Daniela cried for the first fifteen minutes, but she forced herself to keep going. Soon, the paintbrush took over and she became lost in the painting. She painted the dream instead of the reality. Perhaps it helped a little. Daniela is not really sure yet. Although nothing makes sense right now, she and Jeff always believed in the healing power of art and music, her being an artist and him being a very talented musician. It is one of the reasons they fell in love. Daniela has to believe that if she keeps going, that if she keeps creating, somewhere down this horribly tragic road, she will somehow find light again in her life.
“To my Jeffrey, I love you, I miss you every moment of every day, and when the universe is ready, I will find you again. To my art collectors, if you have experienced heartbreaking grief such as this, I hope that sharing my story and my art with you may offer comfort and healing.”
