Veiled Canopy: a solo exhibition by Henry Jackson

Veiled Canopy. Installation at Stewart Gallery.

OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY, JUNE 21, 2024

Stewart Gallery is pleased to present paintings and works on paper by artist Henry Jackson inspired by his experience in the Costa Rica rain forest at M o n t e A z u l Center for the Arts.

“As a firsthand observer of Henry Jackson’s oeuvre and his artistic development for over two decades, I am continually impressed by his ability to interpret new subject matter with a fresh, immediate perspective, all while maintaining his work’s distinctive structure and inherent revisionism.

Highlighting a fresh yet familiar direction in his artistry, Jackson’s work in 2024 continues to confront the lyrical tendencies in his use of color with the rugged fracturing of lines, shapes, and suggested space.

Jackson’s creative process involves the gradual application and elimination of layers of color, creating depth and translucency. By using only materials and pigments derived from nature, he accentuates his passion for the natural world and the human form. In applying these materials, Jackson eschews refined tools, instead employing unconventional and crude implements to keep the painting free and challenging, ensuring he avoids becoming overly meticulous with any particular area.

The resulting tension between the beautiful and the brutish masterfully conveys Jackson’s exploration of the relationship between the ethereal and the material worlds, avoiding any descent into hieroglyphic banality.

Because he invariably starts with the figure, whether it remains present or dissolves into atmospheric vestiges, Jackson’s work evokes shared human experiences. Even when responding to outside physical subjects such as landscapes or sensorial perceptions that recall his urban San Francisco origins and his decades-long passion for the tropical rain forest of Monte Azul in Costa Rica, the viewer is invited to share and interpret these works on their own terms.”
