Shahzia Sikander, born in 1969 in Lahore, Pakistan, is a distinguished Pakistani-American visual artist renowned for her innovative fusion of traditional miniature painting techniques with contemporary themes. Sikander's artistic journey commenced at the National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in 1991. Under the mentorship of master miniaturist Bashir Ahmad, she delved into the intricate practice of Indo-Persian miniature painting—a discipline that had waned in popularity among modern artists of the time. In pursuit of further artistic development, Sikander relocated to the United States, obtaining a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1995.
