What is Crypto-Illustration? It is a form of dialectical illustration by Raju Peddada that is a combination of geometrical symbols, numbers, alphabets and silhouetted images codified into a composite visual in stark B&W to serve as a cryptic narrative that intrigues and engages on any numbers of issues, from anus to misinformation and from necrophilia to zeitgeist. It can be a composite of elements in symmetry or asymmetry presented as a coded narrative or a cryptographic device to decipher. This is an esoteric and an original art form in expression without precedence or a precursor that can engage the viewer for some time.
It’s also a magical visual matrix in cryptic- expressionism. Up close it’s a cipher to unravel, removed from it, it’s an aesthetic whole. The illustrator, Raju Peddada, sits with no plan, but starts extemporaneously and lets it evolve to its destined definition – often, he is simply astonished to find that the resulting illustration is the byproduct of what’s been on his conscience or preoccupying him. He deliberately approaches his work both ways, with a plan for a project, and without one for a catharsis, either way it’s visceral, like the Russian Roulette. It’s complex, yet simple and beautiful.
