Interview

Tom Dorr

Tom Dorr started his art career after many jobs where he was not happy in. He has produced works shown in shows and galleries since 1996 and have failed to catch up with the demand which is not a complaint. The most interesting part of his journey has been traveling to ranches, riding horses to gather cattle, sitting around campfires and sleeping under the stars.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I received a college scholarship but didn't start painting full time until later after marrying my wife.”

What inspires you?

“Working cowboys, landscapes, traveling, and talking to other artists.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“Mainly working cowboys , the horses they have and the landscapes they work in.”

How would you describe your work?

“My current work is considered realistic impressionism.”

Which artists influence you most?

“James Reynolds, Howard Rogers, Monet, and many others.”

“I’m focused on creating dramatic landscape and architectural images, always striving to provide a new experience for the viewer.”

What is your creative process like?

“Hectic trying to work for galleries is at best trying sometimes and gathering ideas is a large part of the process.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“The most important is that you do what you love and find the outlet for your work.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“My experience has been with several galleries and numerous shows in Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona.”
