Interview

Tani Gomez

Inspired by nature and memories of his early childhood in the Dominican Republic, Tani creates illustrations, sculptures and paintings that are whimsical and sometimes haunting.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I was born in the Dominican Republic, a magnificent country filled with vibrant colors and beautiful people. I majored in graphic design and illustration , I then had the opportunity to work in the film industry where I learned various sculpting techniques from prosthetics to mold making.

I now combine all those skills to produce my current body of work.

TV both inspired my imagination and created this urge in me to be creative. All my life I couldn't figure out how to make a living as a creative person and then I realized the only way I could make it as an artist is by allowing myself to be me. To use all I've learned and create the art that was always in me. The art that comes from my roots is the art that influenced me as a child. This is my journey.”

What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?

“I want my work to represent my heritage and cross over and to mix with other cultures all over the world. To transcend into something that touches everyone in a positive way.”

Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?

"I plan too much. I need to loosen up.”

Are there any art world trends you are following?

“I love original work and people that do their own thing. It's less popular but it shows that those artist think for themselves.”

What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?

“I sketch things out, either in pencil or watercolor. I also enjoy digital sketching on my iPad. Once I have a solid Idea I execute it in sculpture form, watercolor or acrylics.”

What does your art mean to you?

“Life.”
