Interview
Su Barikan
Su Barikan, a luminary in the world of contemporary art, has etched an indelible mark of success through a transformative journey of creative brilliance. Rooted in a solid foundation of fine arts during high school, Su’s trajectory unfolds as a resplendent odyssey of triumphs across diverse and elite creative realms. Post-high school, she embarked on a metamorphic exploration of interior design in Istanbul (2003), setting the stage for a grand ascent. Su extended her creative prowess to the esteemed Istituto per l’Arte e il Restauro Palazzo Spinelli in Florence, Italy, through the prestigious Leonardo da Vinci Mobility Pass Programme. The Netherlands served as the fertile ground where Su’s artistic ingenuity blossomed at the renowned Gerrit Rietveld Academy. The pinnacle came with the exclusive selection of her work for the Royal Academy of Art exhibition, followed by a two-year immersion into fashion design at The Hague’s Royal Academy of Art, where her designs graced the zenith of the KABK fashion show.
Su’s influence transcends the expected, as witnessed in her groundbreaking collaboration on visual designs for robots at TU Delft: Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands in 2013, a testament to not just adaptability but visionary innovation. In 2022, Su’s intellectual brilliance was affirmed with a graduation in Philosophy from Istanbul University, marking the rare convergence of artistic brilliance and scholarly distinction. The magnetic pull of her art led her to New York, where her debut exhibition on March 3, 2023, became not just a turning point but a seismic event, catalyzing a cascade of success with nearly 30 subsequent exhibitions across the globe, in cities such as those in Italy, Monaco, London, Georgia and beyond. In the dynamic landscapes of New York and beyond, Su stands not just as an artist but as an icon of excellence, ready to redefine and enrich the cultural fabric of the United States. Her journey is more than a narrative; it’s a symphony of creativity and impact that echoes far beyond the canvas.
What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“I began my journey in the art world at the age of 15, delving into fine arts. Following high school, my educational path extended into interior design, fashion design, and philosophy.”
What inspires you?
“My inspiration lies in nature, specifically the enchanting visuals of the sky and ocean, while philosophy serves as the bedrock for my ideas. Currently, I’m focusing on the psychological and sociological effects of play, necessitating a meticulous observation of people’s actions.”
What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?
“The message is clear: I strive to prompt people to embrace a “poetic” way of life. I believe the increasing population has a negative impact on the quality of our actions, with poor education and relationships contributing to robotic and cheap behaviors.”
“I strive to prompt people to embrace a “poetic” way of life.”
How would you describe your work?
“My artworks are distinguished by an abstract and minimalistic style, featuring intricate textures that captivate and demand attention. Through the interplay of subtle forms, muted tones, and pronounced textures, I aim to create a visual experience that invites viewers to engage deeply with the tactile elements within each piece.”
Which artists influence you most?
“It’s challenging to pick one, especially for someone like me with diverse backgrounds in art and design. But I’d say I’m proud of Louise Bourgeois, particularly for her achievements in the male-dominated art world.”
What is your creative process like?
“I initially attempt to guide the colors and textures, there comes a point where the painting itself seems to assert its autonomy, urging me to let go and allow the flow to unfold organically. This dynamic interaction adds a layer of spontaneity to my work, resulting in a harmonious fusion of deliberate control and the expressive freedom that emerges during the creative journey.”
What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?
“Artists are pivotal in societal evolution, actively addressing global concerns and advocating inclusivity to drive impactful change.”
Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?
“When I held my first exhibition in New York, it marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey. It attracted attention locally and in Europe, resulting in almost 30 subsequent exhibitions. The Times Square showcase is particularly special to me; witnessing my artwork in such a globally renowned square was an amazing experience.”
