Interview
Steve Fogel
Steve Fogel is a retired physician who has transformed his lifelong passion for photography into a full-time creative pursuit. With a keen eye for detail honed through years of medical precision, he approaches each image with both technical mastery and artistic sensitivity. His work captures the subtle interplay of light, form, and emotion—revealing the beauty in both the ordinary and the extraordinary moments that surround us. In recent years, Steven has embraced the exciting possibilities of AI-assisted imaging, blending traditional photography with modern technology to push the boundaries of visual storytelling. Each piece begins with an original photograph, then evolves through innovative digital techniques that deepen mood, texture, and meaning. Through his art, Steven invites viewers to see the world anew—through the lens of curiosity, reflection, and creative exploration.
What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?
“I am interested in sharing my work with people who would enjoy a wide range of art genre. I have not yet settled on a specific niche preferring to try to appeal to a wide range of tastes. Having said that, I have found that I appreciate black & white, line drawings and sketches, pop art and abstract art. I use AI assistance to create prints from my original photos.”
Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?
“I plan my photography in advance. AI assisted creations are usually not planned. I review my photos, edit the best, and then see what can be done with AI assistance as well as digital art creations.”
Are there any art world trends are you following?
“Not really. I review artwork on line to see what others are doing, especially in photography.”
What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?
“I work with digital photography, and I use editing programs such as Lightroom and Photoshop and AI assistance.”
What does your art mean to you?
“Since I am retired, I find that it is great to be able to spend my time doing something with purpose and, hopefully, being able to share it with others who may apprentice my work.”
What’s your favourite artwork and why?
“I like the impressionists. I find this style to be captivating. It is something quite different from earlier periods where realistic detail is often stressed.”
