Interview

Stephen Thiele

With a palette filled with passion and a confident embrace of color, Stephen creates paintings that ignite the imagination and invites you to embark on a jaunt of self- discovery. Painting to Stephen becomes a language, while a canvas becomes a gateway to a world where reality, impressionism, and abstract dance in harmony. Stephen believes anyone can paint and everyone has a story that can be expressed and created onto a canvas. So, dear art enthusiasts clutch the passion, embrace the color and let your imagination run wild as you begin a journey through captivating creations. May your eyes light up and a smile emerge as you position yourself to paint and create with the power of choice. Stephen has also written, and self-published two children's books found on Amazon (version 1 and 2 “What am I”) and has written a book of poetry and short stories proving that artists can be creative in many ways.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I started painting at a young age and loved it. At 17 years old, I was accepted into the Adelaide School of Art but after a short stay I had to make a choice between art and business. I had to take the business lane to earn a living. This turned out to be successful for me as I became an International Wool Buyer, travelling the world. I kept in touch with my creative side during this time and painted for relaxation. Now, 54 years later, I have recently opened my own art gallery and paint reality, impressions and abstract in bold vibrant colors which dance with harmony. I have entered some paintings in local art shows and people have purchased them and hung them in their home. This is very rewarding and gratifying while my journey continues in earnest.”

What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?

“I believe anyone can paint and everyone has a story that can be expressed onto a canvas. There is no right or wrong in art and my aim is to inspire and encourage others young and old to let their imagination run wild. In the world today, art can bring all people together and break down barriers by telling a story, showing feelings. Art can unite us together no matter your creed, religion, background, or status in life.”

Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?

“I do not have more than one painting being created at once. My painting inspiration may come from a walk in the forest, listening to a song, etc. It may come from watching the sun rise or set, the relentless sea waves, or a mood or feeling I have experienced. I tend to visualize the end result before I start, and it just develops from there with an exaggeration of color and feeling where possible. The first paint brush is spontaneous, the second stroke is ad-libbing, then it just flourishes from there.”

“Art truly is a source of good vibe and positive energy for me, and I am grateful to be able to share that with others.”

Are there any art world trends you are following?

“I don't wish to be described as a follower as every artist is unique with their own passion and freedom of choice of color, texture, and personal technique. My trend is to portray a feeling of creativity and give joy to others, but also give food for thought.”

What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?

“Acrylic is my preferred paint as it is so versatile, however I have used oil overtones. I like the palette knife technique, mixing of colors and I have an open mind to use any material to give a pleasant or different finish. As an artist, I am not set in my ways and always willing to have an open mind, and a willingness to explore.”

What does your art mean to you?

“My art gives me pleasure, self-satisfaction, uniqueness, and the opportunity to create something special from a blank canvas. But most of all - I smile to myself when I hear someone's positive comment on my paintings or when someone is prepared to purchase my creation and hang it in their home. They wouldn't purchase it if it wasn't meaningful or attractive to them.”

What’s your favourite artwork and why?

“I have a lot of favorites, just knowing the art is unique, a one-off piece creation. I like portrait's because I am not good at them and respect those artists who are. I love bold, vibrant colors of landscapes, seascapes, colorful flowers, and imaginative structures. My favorite artwork gives me an uplifting feeling, an inner smile and a feeling of energy.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“I have been showing my art online and at local art shows for the past two years. I have been fortunate enough to sell paintings at Sorrento, and Bendigo art shows, also direct to customers via gallery247.”
