Sharon A. Daws

Sharon lives in Folcroft, PA with her husband Jon and three kitty babies, Janis, Gallifrey, and Elle. She works as a Substitute Teacher and loves to share her art with the students. Besides art, Sharon also loves to read, write, and act in community theater.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“My father is an amazing artist. One day, I asked him to draw something for me, and he said, “Why don’t you draw it?” And so began my journey. My family inspires me every day.”

What inspires you?

“My family, the things I love to do/see/feel. Sometimes, I’ll see a landscape that inspires me, or a scene in a movie or a show. The wheels start turning in my brain until I commit it to canvas.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“I strive for the atypical. A scene may inspire me but I like to try to give it a view or an impression of originality, even if it’s an image we’ve seen before. What twist can I give it? How do I make it mine? I’m inspired by the amazing in the mundane.”

How would you describe your work?

“Pop art, fandom art, Twist on the every day. I hope to make people think and smile.”

Which artists influence you most?

“Andy Warhol, Andrew Wyeth, Salvador Dali, and most especially, my Father, John McLaughlin, Jr.”

“I strive for the atypical. A scene may inspire me but I like to try to give it a view or an impression of originality, even if it’s an image we’ve seen before.”

What is your creative process like?

“I’ll see an image that strikes me and almost immediately, I have to start sketching. Sometimes, it stops there. But if I’m really taken with something, I have to finish it as soon as possible. It becomes an obsession to a degree, until it is finished.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“An artist’s calling is different for each artist. An artist should make you think, make you smile, and/or tell a story. Everyone has a different story and perspective to tell.”
