Interview

Sergei Pakholyk

Sergei Pakholyk is a tattoo artist from Ukraine. He is based in Lebanon, but also enjoys guest spots in Europe. Sergei started his tattoo work in 2010 and uses the dotwork/blackwork/ornamental technique.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I was impressed by the look of tattoo on a human body, and started my research to see if I could create something like this - immediately. I fell in love with this type of art from the very beginning. That led me on a journey up to now where for me, creating art is the central meaning of my existence.”

What inspires you?

“I get my inspiration from everything around me, and especially from the inner forms. The world is an amazing place, and I believe it’s an eternal source of inspiration. I love combining symmetry with the natural imperfection of organic shapes.”

“I believe and feel that art is something very natural and basic for us humans. When you create something, it’s like you’re mirroring your inner world. It just makes you blessed.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“I love doing ornaments because they look very different, especially with my signature colors. I just love doing mandalas, sacred geometry, etc. In most cases, the messages behind my work is the message that my clients would like to share; what they want to have on their bodies forever.”

What is your creative process like?

“I’m always in the process of creating and thinking about art, even when I’m out of my studio. I can do sketches anytime, and I’m constantly looking for powerful ideas.”

How would you describe your work?

“My work is my only love.”

What process and techniques do you use to create your artwork?

“I use linework, dotwork and whip shading in most of my works. These techniques are enough to complete any idea, and to create any visual effect that I want. For sketches, I use an iPad, so I don’t need to carry paper and pencil in my pocket anymore. My iPad, honestly, has been a lifesaver for me.”

Which artists influence you most?

“My favourite artist of all the time is Mark Rothko.”

What’s your favourite artwork and why?

“It’s not possible to choose a favourite artwork. My pieces are like kids; they’re all my favourite.”
