Interview
Sahar Sabaghi
Sahar is a Vancouver-based graphic designer and visual artist whose work blends modern minimalism with Iranian traditional details. Influenced by Modern art movements, jazz and rock music, and fashion, her practice focuses on cultural fusion, identity, and contemporary visual storytelling.
What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“I have an academic background in art and graphic design. My journey started with drawing and gradually developed into graphic design, illustration, and visual art. Over time, I found my own visual language by combining modern minimal design with detailed elements inspired by Iranian traditional patterns and Modern art movements.”
What inspires you?
“I am inspired by a mix of cultures, music, and visual contrasts. Jazz and rock music play an important role in shaping the mood of my artworks. Fashion, personal style, cinema, and everyday emotions also strongly influence my creative direction.”
What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?
“My work explores identity, cultural fusion, and self-expression. There is often an underlying message about preserving cultural roots while presenting them in a modern and contemporary visual language.”
How would you describe your work?
“My work is modern, minimal, and expressive, with carefully placed details. I often combine clean compositions with subtle Iranian ornamental elements to create a balance between tradition and modernity.”
Which artists influence you most?
“I am inspired by artists such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí for their bold creativity, as well as M.C. Esc Modern art movements alongside Iranian visual traditions.”
What is your creative process like?
“My creative process often starts with music, especially jazz or rock, to set the emotional tone. I then sketch ideas, experiment with forms and patterns, and refine the work digitally. Intuition and feeling guide many of my decisions.”
What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?
“I believe an artist’s role is to connect cultures, emotions, and ideas. Today, artists can bridge tradition and modern life, creating meaningful conversations through visual language.”
Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?
“I have worked on various creative projects, including film posters, commissioned artworks, and independent visual pieces. These experiences helped me present my artistic identity and connect with diverse audiences.”
