Interview

Robert Williams

Robert Williams was born in Columbus, Ohio, USA.

Inspiration for his work comes to him from many different angles. Through trial and error, MrRobotGeek was created and the man, the brand, and his creativity expanded.

Robert has become a true creator, using many mediums — skin, oil paints, graphic design, fashion design and many others.

He is also a tattoo artist of 15 years, a business owner and the proud father of 4 sons.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I started drawing from a very early age, and my background is in painting, tattooing and fashion design. But as time changed, my mind expanded. After my first tattoo, I saw a new canvas: painting on skin and clothing. I even created my first tattoo gun.

At different stages in my life, my inspiration has come from visiting art museums and watching my grandmother draw.”

What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?

“My works communicate a special message: focus on your inner self to have a better outcome. I’m black and all my artwork is social and political. My inspiration for the work comes from my children and everyday life.”

What themes do you pursue, and is there an underlying message in your work?

“My work talks about loving the person who is inside you, to be inspiring to others and bring recognition to oneself. When it comes to current world trends, I really don’t follow any. I just create whatever I feel in my spirit needs to be let out.”

Which artists influence you most?

“Takashi Murakami, George Condo and Jean-Michel Basquiat have a great influence in my work. I also draw inspiration from the works of Van Gogh and Picasso.”

What is your creative process like?

“I love working with oils, and I work best when I have very good music, candles, and freedom. I have multiple sketches that I go through, but sometimes I just like to hit the canvas with a clean fresh idea.”

“My work is best described as heavy vibration. It’s my way of being free.”

What’s your favorite artwork and why?

“Ignorant Delivering Knowledge or Idk, really.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“An artist’s role is to bring love. The art is seen in the city and in places that would normally not be seen with any art.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“My first art show has always been my favorite.”
