Interview

Nicole Nepote

Nicole, a US born artist, started her creative journey at a young age. She attributes her creative style to her studies at Adler University in Chicago, Illinois.

By the purposeful use of art mediums, and setting up the creative space, Nicole has turned psychology and art making into a career.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I started creating with my mother and grandmother when I was young. I remember being creative in many forms: movement, two and three-dimensional art, and writing. With the help of social media, curating gallery shows, and being featured in art exhibits, my discovery as an artist emerged.”

What inspires you most?

“I’m inspired by emotion, curiosity, and form in the natural world.”

“I believe that genuineness in creating comes from being in the moment.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“It’s not like me to stick strictly to paper. I find joy in having many mediums to choose from. My artwork has an element of texture to it more often than not. Most of my themes center around self-discovery or deeper understanding.”

How would you describe your work?

“My artwork is expressive and intuitive. I try to steer away from forcing the art medium to take the composition I want. I work with the qualities of each medium to allow it to be what it is, just as I am with myself when making art in the creative space.”

Which artists influence you most?

“I enjoy searching for new techniques, and from that I discover other artists. I’ve always been interested in the progression of sculptures that stem from the Venus of Willendorf.”

What is your creative process like?

“I set up my space before creating, in order to help me get into the creative flow with ease. I consider issues like lighting, whether to keep it quiet or play music, what materials I may want to use, whether to work alone or with others, indoor or outdoor, and so on.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“I believe all artists support discovery in some way.”
