Mel Cheriegate
Mel Cheriegate creates nature-inspired abstract artwork designed to transform modern interiors. Rooted in organic shapes, botanical motifs, and rich, earthy palettes, her work captures the essence of the outdoors through a clean, contemporary lens. What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“I always painted and have been very art driven, I was a fashion producer and make up artist long ago. When I got married, we moved to Mocambique and started to paint again, I discovered abstract art and that is how I started.”
What inspires you?
“Nature and colours, sometimes a line can make a big difference in the end, and just like life; one little mistake can lead to something even better.”
What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?
“My message is to see art in everything. I want to paint the world as I see in my heart and soul.”
How would you describe your work?
“Abstract, colourful and beautiful.”
Which artists influence you most?
“Georgea Ofeefe, Rothko and Matisse.”
What is your creative process like?
“Well, I usually start to draw, sometimes inspired by nature. A flower, a landscape. and than I just go from that.”
What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?
“I have a project that is called ‘Whoever you art’ that is basically connect to other artists and people who are struggle like I did with mental health and I think art can bring light and educate people.”
Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?
“I had an exhibition in Brasil and Portugal and I am working right now in an exhibition of my prints in November in Lisbon.”
