Interview

Mary Stephanou

Mary feels that art is sophistication itself, whether taken from nature, wildlife, people, or just the imagination alone. Art is our way of showing the beauty of the mind and thanks to the world we live in. Art for Mary shows that sophistication and serenity will calm the mind and bring an aura of peace and harmony to the home.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I was born in the Netherlands and came to Australia when I was 14. My working career has been in finance, certainly not a place for creativity, however during Covid Lockdown I felt an urge to paint. Our two Pomeranians had passed on, and I wanted to preserve their memory in paint. However, I have always felt that within me something needed to be expressed, images came to mind in my dreams and on walks in the parks, and hence I began my journey into the sophisticated world of art.”

Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?

“I improvise, what I dream of, what I see or feel, I try to express on canvas. My inspiration came from nature, animals and just the wonders of the world.”

Are there any art world trends are you following?

“Not specifically, however when I see the many talented works from artists, I am amazed at the talent out there!”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“I try and create something that is both peaceful and majestic. There is no underlying message, just a wish to enjoy the beauty of the world with others. A beautiful, peaceful gliding whale in the water on canvas, can make you take a deep breath and help reduce the stress in life.”

What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?

“Acrylic paints, inks, canvas, modeling paste, sand, seashells, rope, cloth whatever items give me ideas, goes on the canvas. I feel driven to create, being retired now I can spend a fair amount of time on my love for art. My dining room is a mess, paint everywhere, but such is the life of an artist!”

What does your art mean to you?

“These artworks are my creative and artistic expression, featuring unique textures and a palette that captures the essence of my vision. They are not just a mere decoration, but hopefully a conversation starter that brings a touch of modern sophistication to any space.”

What’s your favourite artwork and why?

“There are so many styles and amazing pieces from artists, that choosing a favourite one would be impossible. All artists are amazing, some of the artwork I have seen leave me in awe. To name a favourite is basically impossible. For me, the paintings I created of my furry friends have an emotional attachment and therefore of course are my favourites.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“My paintings have been exhibited as a private viewing at the Bunjil Place, also the Emerald Art exhibition. Also, my doctor has one in his rooms, my dentist does, the physio has one, some of my friends have requested commissions. But for a new artist without any formal training, it's a start.”
