Interview

Marry Nilles

Marie-Paule Nilles was born in Ettelbrück (Luxembourg). Painting is in her blood. She loves to paint ever since she was a child. As life would have it, it all faded away. Children came along and at that time, family came first. She understood therapy at a psychometric clinic in Kassel including art therapy, which helped her to some extent in my recovery. In 2008, she completed several painting courses at the Trier Academy where she improved her technique. Her instructor at the time watched her work and said: “Go wild Marie!” What he meant was, “Come out of your shell!” Marie certainly had the talent, but at that time she didn’t really dare to express herself. Nevertheless, that statement was decisive for her. Later, she spent a week with a portrait artist in Italy. This woman also taught her a great deal. Today, painting has become a big part of her life. She paints with passion and she enjoys it immensely. Marie has become a confident woman who has her life well under control.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“Even as a child, my bedroom was wallpapered with pictures. My dream was to become an artist, and I fulfilled that dream.”

What inspires you?

“Basically anything that‘s alive. Animals, flowers, people. My world is colorful. In nature while walking in the woods, new ideas come to me.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“I am expressionist. I often paint my feelings on canvas. For example: ‘Letting go.’”

How would you describe your work?

“Full of life. Looking ahead and lots of colour and courage.”

Which artists influence you most?

“Artists like Vincent van Gogh and Monet inspire me.”

“Artists like Vincent van Gogh and Monet inspire me.”

What is your creative process like?

“I’m part of an artists’ collective (Artboxyteam). Through them, my art travels the world. Among other things, I was chosen from among 100 Europeans to present my art in a book.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“Since I’m a positive person, I see things very well. Selling art isn’t easy! You have to put in the work. I‘ve done many exhibitions and will organize one next year.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“I was in Paris this year with my group Artboxyteam. It was wonderful. It was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had.”
