Interview
Marie Getta
Marie is based in Moscow, but has international experience. Her artworks are kept in private collections around the world. She studied at the Russian Stroganov Art Academy, and is grateful to all her teachers. She believes, however, that most of her skills and vision are the result of her personal input.
Marie came to erotic art through experimenting and searching; trying to understand her personality, desires, and sexuality.
She is driven by the desire to explore the nature of humans and her own sexuality through the prism of her art. Maria believes that every emotion and feeling experienced by a human is beautiful. By creating art, she wants to show all the edges of individuality and talk about the beauty of the soul through the expression of the bodies.
Eroticism has existed in one way or another throughout the ages, and Maria aims to convey this in her personal way.
What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“I have been drawing throughout my conscious life. It was always my favorite ‘hobby’ until the day I decided to make it a profession. For a long time before that, I had a strong imposed belief that being an artist was not a serious career. As I embarked on a difficult but very exciting journey to get to know myself and answer the question of ‘who I am’, my life began to change dramatically. My art began to fill me and my life in a deeply profound way. I am grateful to the universe and to myself for making the decision to give up everything, and do what I truly love and have passion and dedication for. That happened at the age of 24.”
“My personal experiences, my feelings and my life journey are a great source of inspiration for me. I also feel inspired by my inner changes. I love to observe how I open up inside. I get high from myself, and that can only be reflected in my art. My favorite quote is, ‘The artist inspires; he is not inspired.’”
What inspires you most?
“I'm at the level of not constantly looking for any inspiration. Most of the time I'm inspired to create, or maybe I'm used to it - I can't say for sure. I'm not looking for a specific mood. The evening sunset can inspire me. I can also be inspired by aromatic coffee in a cozy café, music and gentle movements of my body, candles and the evening mood and the touch of a loved one. Also, the work of other artists, good movies and especially photography. I'm usually mostly in the right mood to create. If not, I rest and wait to be filled with that energy again, and that's normal too. I just let myself be inspired.”
What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?
“I want to show all the edges of individuality, and talk about the beauty of the soul through the expression of bodies. I would describe my artistic expression as being driven by the desire to explore my own sexuality and the nature of humanity. Art allows me to express and realize myself and share a part of me with the world. That is so important.”
Which artists influence you most?
“I love Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt.”
How would you describe your work?
“‘My art is me.’ This is my favorite saying. I use it in my bio on social networks. That's because my art fully represents me, my individuality and my personal self-image. Sometimes I can't afford to express myself like that in real life, so my art helps me do that. My art transmits me to the world. I pass on some facets of my personality, the most intimate and exciting ones, through my art without completely exposing myself as a person. This is probably safer, but also more fascinating.”
What is your creative process like?
“The first person I often get inspired by is myself. For someone else, this may seem overconfident. But I think it is absolutely normal when the love, passion and the desire to create comes primarily from within yourself, and from self-love and self-enjoyment. If you are lacking in love inside, then there will be nothing to express through your art.
Therefore, before I start creating art, or sometimes during the process, I need to get a dose of inspiration from myself, enjoying myself and the present moment. Often, I take my own sensual pictures, watch erotic or any other inspiring movies, turn on tantric music, meditate, light candles with a glass of my favorite tannin wine - all this creates the necessary atmosphere, which contributes to creating art as I see it inside myself.”
What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?
“Recently, I realized that I have a great need to give people something much more than my artwork; something that is energetically stronger. To give them something of my knowledge, my energy and my love. Something that makes them feel something new; that reveals itself to them. My art is helping me do that.
I get more and more feedback that my art, my personality and my view of the world inspires, gives a stimulus to something new. That it opens new facets of sensuality and sexuality in people that they were not aware of before. When people write such words of gratitude, and not only for the drawing, I feel that I am doing everything for a reason. I feel a deep mission of my own, to the full understanding of which I only move.”
