Interview
KJ Williams
KJ Williams is a Christian fine spray paint artist out of Florence, KY. He currently uses his talents and artistic ability to grab peoples attention to bring them closer to God.
What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“Well, ever since I was a child I always had a passion to create and a strong interest in art. I took art classes all throughout school but didn't start taking art seriously until I graduated high school. I would always draw still life and paint a lot of abstract art. One year, I went to California to visit my family and we decided to go to San Francisco. I remember walking down this one street and hearing loud music playing. There was a huge crowd of people in a circle around this one guy, who had a table set up with spray paint cans everywhere. The artist had painted this beautiful city scape, with a huge planet in the background and in the middle of the planet was the 49ers football team logo. People were clapping giving him a round of applause. I was thinking to myself how amazing it was and how much I wanted to paint like that. So, as soon as I came back home I went out to Walmart bought some spray paint cans and poster bored paper and began to try this new style of art.”
What inspires you?
“What inspires me is the Bible and God using my talent and creativity to bring as many people closer to him as possible.”
What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?
“Mostly, you will see abstract, but I paint a lot of planets, seascapes and landscapes. My message would be to form a relationship with God and talk to him as much as possible.”
“I was thinking to myself how amazing it was and how much I wanted to paint like that.”
How would you describe your work?
“Fine spray paint art and modern fine art mixed with abstract.”
Which artists influence you most?
“Ruben Sadot.”
What is your creative process like?
“First, I think of the idea then how I'm going to execute it, I might look up a reference to guide me. Then, I put on some good music and start creating. The process is very simple; nothing complicated. If I can't think of anything to paint, I usually wait on God until he gives me the idea.”
What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?
“The artist's role is to create and make life enjoyable, We have a gift and when you have a gift you share it with the world you don't keep it to yourself. Whether you are enjoying music, fashion, art, photography it all came from artist and its something to be acknowledged. Art will always be around as long as the world keeps spinning. Art, of course, is connected to different cultures, but art will continue to evolve as long as we as artist, creator, designer, innovator use our God given talents to help solve the worlds problems and create a new culture for us in the future.”
