Interview

Katherine Raible

Katherine Raible is a Canadian artist based in Edmonton, Alberta — a storyteller and lifelong creative who draws inspiration from the beauty, wonder, and connections that make life meaningful. Through her work, she aims to capture moments that spark joy, stir emotion, and invite viewers to see the world with fresh eyes. Primarily working in acrylics, Katherine also explores watercolour, oil pastels, charcoal, and mixed media to create vibrant, expressive pieces inspired by nature, animals, family, faith, music, and the everyday moments that often become our most treasured memories. Whether painting a colorful landscape, a beloved pet, whimsical florals, or an imaginative scene, she seeks to evoke feeling and tell a story. Katherine’s journey as an artist is deeply shaped by life experiences.

As a heart attack survivor, she has developed a profound appreciation for each day and a heightened awareness of how precious moments truly are. That perspective informs her work and drives her desire to create art that celebrates hope, gratitude, resilience, and the beauty that surrounds us.

Beyond painting, she is also a photographer, musician, entrepreneur, wife, and mother. Creativity has been woven through every chapter of her life, and she enjoys sharing that passion with others. Her hope is that each piece she creates brings warmth, inspiration, and meaning into the homes of those who collect it. For her, art is more than something beautiful to hang on a wall — it is a way to connect, tell stories, preserve memories, and celebrate the richness of life.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I’ve always been creative and have expressed myself through many different forms of art. I’ve been a professional photographer for nearly two decades, and photography taught me to really see light, colour, emotion and the little moments that make life beautiful. Over the years, I found myself wanting another creative outlet, and painting became that place for me. What started as something I simply loved doing has grown into a very meaningful part of my life. I’m largely self-taught and continue to explore acrylics, oils, watercolour, oil pastels, charcoal and other mediums.”

What inspires you?

“I’m inspired by beauty in everyday life—light, nature, animals, people, movement and the incredible landscapes around us. I love the way light can completely transform a scene. Living in Alberta, I’m especially inspired by our skies, seasons, prairie landscapes and Northern Lights. I’m also inspired by emotion and by the stories and feelings a particular moment can evoke.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“My work often explores hope, beauty, connection, faith, freedom and finding light in the darker places. I want my paintings to evoke a feeling. Whether it’s a peaceful landscape, a wild animal, flowers or a city beneath the Northern Lights, I hope the viewer can pause for a moment and feel something. My faith is also an important part of who I am, and themes of grace, hope and light naturally find their way into my work.”

How would you describe your work?

“I would describe my work as expressive, colourful and emotionally driven. I love movement and texture, and I’m not afraid of bold colour or letting the paint have a life of its own. I’m drawn to creating work that feels alive rather than perfectly controlled. Whether I’m painting a landscape, an animal or a moment of light, I want there to be a sense of atmosphere and emotion.”

Which artists influence you most?

“I’m influenced by many different artists and styles rather than one particular artist. I love artists who use colour, light and expressive brushwork to create emotion. I’m continually inspired by both contemporary artists and the great masters (like Van Gogh), and I enjoy learning from anyone who challenges me to see differently or try something new.”

What is your creative process like?

“My process often begins with something that catches my eye—a photograph, a moment, a colour combination, a landscape or simply an idea that I can’t stop thinking about. I usually begin with a general vision but allow the painting to evolve as I work. I love experimenting with texture, colour and different tools, and sometimes the painting takes me somewhere completely unexpected. For me, the process is as much about discovery as it is about creating the finished piece.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“I believe artists have the ability to make people stop, feel and see the world differently. In a world that can feel incredibly busy and overwhelming, art gives us an opportunity to slow down and connect—with ourselves, with one another and with something bigger than ourselves. I think that role will become even more important as technology continues to move so quickly. There will always be something incredibly meaningful about something created by human hands, from human experience and emotion.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to share my work publicly and to continue growing as an artist. One of the things I’ve particularly enjoyed is participating in community events where art becomes part of a larger experience and has the opportunity to give back. I’m especially excited about opportunities to paint live and create work that supports local organizations and causes. Being able to combine my love of art with community, connection and giving back is something that is very meaningful to me.”
