Interview

Karla Deal

Karla Deal is a self-taught artist residing in Nashville, TN, working with the copper element via a patina process to create truly unique, one of a kind pieces. The copper element has endless possibilities when creating a patina with a very elegant, distressed and modern end result. All pieces in her copper patina process are one of a kind. All of Karla’s work is inspired by nature, especially sunsets and she is always experimenting to create new colours and patterns. The process begins by aging the copper, acquired on rolls since she works with large pieces. The results are much more dramatic on larger pieces, as you can see much more of the flow, patterns and colours of the patina. The aging/ patina process is primarily done in a combination of a ammonia baths, vinegar, salt and other chemicals.

The copper baths may last from a few hours to several days, depending on the temperatures, humidity and desired colours. Many variables can and will determine the length of time in the necessary baths. Once the copper has been aged and the desired look has been achieved, the panels are mounted and edge wrapped, if the end pieces are wall art. The design process is simply what Karla feels flows well, given the final piece she is creating.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I have always been involved in creative processes. I owned a Marketing Consulting Business for 23 years. I took a lot of photography courses in college and that was my passion and still is a huge passion of mine. The copper journey began about 10 years ago. I am not exactly sure where I came up with the idea to start creating copper patina but once I did, I have been hooked ever since. I honestly believe that the universe had the idea and I just happen to be open to it.”

What inspires you?

“Nature inspires me!”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“My themes are landscapes, sunsets and anything inspired by nature. I suppose my underlying message would be to connect to nature. That's where everything begins and ends. Nature is a teacher and will help guide you to connect with your heart.”

How would you describe your work?

“It's a symbiotic process with the copper. Clearly, I have to allow the copper to flow in the direction that it feels and I guide it along to achieve the final look I am envisioning. The final outcomes are influenced by hot/cold temps, humidity, length of time in chemical baths, etc. Every piece I create is most definitely one of a kind. Its' a process which is not complete until I have achieved what I feel is the desired look. Working with copper patina resembles a Wabi-Sabi Style which simply means finding beauty in imperfection. It is a philosophy of accepting the natural and pure state of things and rejecting the idea of artificial beauty and perfection.”

Which artists influence you most?

“I have an affinity for a wide range of artists which also include photographers. Da Vinci, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Annie Leibovitz to name a few. The list is actually long.”

“Every piece I create is most definitely one of a kind. Its' a process which is not complete until I have achieved what I feel is the desired look.”

What is your creative process like?

“I primarily use chemicals, temperature and humidity, and other ‘secret’ elements to create custom copper pieces! It's all about patience. I manipulate and then I wait and see the results. When working with copper, there are so many factors that affect the end result and the colors that you can achieve.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“I believe the role of an artist is to inspire people to connect with their heart. Artists create from their heart and soul and hopefully it opens viewers and buyers to feel that connection to their heart and soul. An emotional connection to others.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“I am displayed in several galleries and work primarily with custom orders.”
