Interview
Jonathon Johnson
Jonathon Johnson is an abstractionist who paints on mixed media, melted moments, divine brilliants.
What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“I accidentally stumbled into what I am doing in 1994. I was managing a glam band from Hollywood. I bought them crayons because they were called Krayola kids. In the process, I was melting crayons to make them backstage passes with wooden matches. Anyways, after that I started with poster boards melting crayons and it evolved into what I like doing now, melting crayons and painting on glass. My signature has been my trademark since it comes out in reverse because I sign my name on. My art is all originals. No possible way of duplications. And the rest is history.”
What inspires you?
“A lot of things inspire me. I'm big on sunrises. I'm very spiritual and have spiritual principles. I like doing good. Some of my art has hidden in it, that you wouldn't know it unless you have black light. A lot of my art glows in the dark too. I give all the credit to God. Without Him none of this would happen.”
What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?
“I have four or five styles that I try to create that have become my signature pieces. For underlying messages I give credit to God.”
How would you describe your work?
“If you let all the zoo animals out at one time, that is my work. That's how I would describe my work.”
Which artists influence you most?
“There are a lot of artists that influence me. Some artists that I was told I resemble, like Jackson Pollock. Picasso is another one. And I love Toni Curtis' work.”
What is your creative process like?
“Only a handful of people know how I do my art. The process of how I start creating is isolating by myself for weeks at a time. I keep everything a secret. It worked the best for me.”
What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?
“For me it's giving me back to people and making something beautiful for people's walls is something I enjoy.”
Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?
“Pekin Art Festival North Dakota, honorable mention. Arizona State Fair 3rd Place Santa Cruz County. My work was displayed at Sonoita Vineyards. I was also a called to Artist Arizona University. My art will be displayed July through September at High Country Artisans.”
