Interview
John Trevorrow
John is a contemporary Scottish visual artist, residing in the historic Cathedral town of Dunkeld where most of his early influences were born. John’s main inspirations come from the abstract forms and textures of the natural landscape/Seascapes of Scotland and further afield. Reflection, water’ illusion and colour, all play important roles in John’s work. Today, John has adapted and learned Freehand Digital Painting due to now suffering from long term Chronic Nerve Pain and Fibromyalgia. Due to pain, John finds standing at the easel using traditional methods and mediums such as oil or acrylics at times a very painful experience. Over the years, John has developed his own style being described by clients and viewers alike as minimal abstract, tranquil’ peaceful, full of illusion passion and movement. He paints with feeling and thought.
What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“I was born in the small industrial and agricultural town of Blairgowrie, Perthshire, Scotland as the son of a Jute Mill Mechanic and hard working mother. My journey into art just evolved, I can’t remember a time I didn’t make a mark on a piece of paper or canvas from a very young child. The journey has been a long one’ honing the gift I was given from the days of childhood until today where the journey continues.”
What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?
“My work aims to give peace and calmness through abstract illusion and reflections that only nature can offer. I keep social and political issues out and away from my work. Art is my escape and at times my solitude.”
Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?
“I never plan a work but do feel a work in advance of putting paint to canvas along with subconscious memories improvisation plays its own part while creating.”
Are there any art world trends you are following?
“I follow no trends, all my work is personal, individual and I hope unique.”
What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?
“The process of creating my work can only be described as chaotic with purpose. As a traditional artist, oils and acrylics play vital roles although technology has opened new doors in which to take my art. Over the years, I have learned Freehand Digital Paintings. My technique is quite simple: pick up a brush or pallet knife and just let things happen.”

What does your art mean to you?
“Art to me, means the very existence of my being.”
What’s your favourite artwork and why?
“I never compare or have favourites as I see all my work as my children, all have their own individuality and qualities.”
Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?
“In the past, I have done several exhibitions solo or joint, throughout Scotland and while travelling and painting my way through both island of N.Z. This coming year, my work will be on view in both Belgrade (Serbia) and Dubrovnik (Croatia) at The Belgrade Cultural Association.”
