Interview

Joey Matesic

Joey creates artwork that is inspired by music. He doesn’t limit himself to just one style. He creates his artwork on canvas with acrylic medium and his art is limited to only one collection which is called “Music Through The Ages.”

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“As an adolescent growing up, my favorite subjects in school were art and music. To my surprise, I would combine the two together as I would go home and paint my favorite musicians and bands while listening to their songs. I stopped painting when I was teenager as I was interested in playing sports and hanging out with my friends. What reignited the spark was when I was interested in a piece of art with a bottle of wine being poured into two glasses to hang on the living room wall. Instead of purchasing the painting, I decided to pick up a brush after nearly 20 years and paint it myself. And that's when my passion for painting emerged again. I've received plenty of recognition for this piece of artwork and from that moment on I have been creating more pieces. Fast forward 10 years later as I revisit my adolescent days, I’ve created my one and only collection called, ‘Music Through the Ages’ where all of my artwork is inspired by music.”

What inspires you?

“Music is the driving force and inspiration for my artwork. Continuously listening to the song that is influencing the current piece of artwork that I am working on and watching the video of that song is what inspires me.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“My creative inquisitiveness is diverse as I don't limit myself to one style. I will mostly use bright colors, which invariably elevates my state of mind. My ambition is to evoke passionate emotions for my art collectors, while they connect with my melodic pieces. I want my paintings to shake the viewer, to move them. I want them to feel the emotion from the song through the artwork. I want the consumer to find the piece that best speaks to them.”

How would you describe your work?

“My creative inquisitiveness is diverse as I don't limit myself to one style so my artwork can be all over the place. Abstract, figurative, pop art, cubism, etc.”

Which artists influence you most?

“My favorite artist is Pablo Picasso, but I also like works from Vincent van Gogh and Jean-Michel Basquiat.”

What is your creative process like?

“I need to be alone with the door closed, headphones on and music blaring in my ears to begin my creative process.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“To me, art is much like music thus why I create art influenced by music. It can often be difficult to put into words the emotions that music evokes. The range of emotion a person can feel while listening to music is truly unmeasurable. It can change your mood in a matter of seconds. It releases endorphins in the brain. With high endorphin levels, we have fewer negative effects of stress. Music is such a powerful tool. It has an intense yet positive impact on physical and mental health. It can help increase focus, clear our minds, and improve our overall well-being. It can bring up memories from the past, help people work together, increase motivation, and bring out creativity. Music is a universal language.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“I’ve had only five exhibits/art shows to date as I’ve been working on getting my artwork into magazines and billboards in NYC, London, and Las Vegas. The 5 exhibits/art shows that I’ve done are “Road less traveled” Art Exhibit at Galeria Westerhoff, “Bacam Art Market” at Bowery Art Collective, “Art show” at Northern Soul, “Music Through the Ages” vol 1 solo art exhibition at Mission 50 and “Music Through the Ages” vol 2 solo art exhibition at Salsa Fever On2. I will continue to do the “Music Through the Ages” solo art exhibitions as they were my most successful exhibits.”
