What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I grew up in Haapajärvi, a small town in the North Ostrobothnia province of Finland, nestled in the central part of the country. From there, my journey into the art world also began. Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a child, I was always drawn to creative activities, particularly drawing. I spent countless hours with marker pens and paper in my room, sketching. Most of my drawings featured our two cats or my favorite band of that time, Gorillaz. My mother recognized my interest in art early on and played a pivotal role in nurturing this passion. She believed in the importance of fostering creativity and made it a priority to provide me with opportunities to explore my artistic talents. One of the key ways she supported me was by enrolling me in various art classes. These classes were more than just an after-school activity; they were a space where I could experiment with different techniques and mediums. Through these classes, I was introduced to the basics of drawing and painting, and I quickly discovered a love for creating visual art. The structured environment of the classes helped me develop discipline and provided a solid foundation in the fundamentals of art.

In addition to the art classes, my mother also encouraged me to participate in drawing competitions. These competitions were an exciting challenge for me as a child. They pushed me to improve my skills and gave me the confidence to showcase my work to others. The positive feedback and occasional awards I received were incredibly motivating and reinforced my desire to continue pursuing art. As I grew older, my passion for art deepened, and I began to experiment with different mediums. I moved from simple sketches to more detailed drawings, eventually discovering the unique qualities of working with graphite and other forms of lead. I was captivated by the ability to create depth, texture, and emotion through shades of gray, and this led me to focus on pencil drawings, particularly in the realm of pet portraiture.

There’s something incredibly powerful about capturing a pet’s likeness and essence through a medium as simple as pencil on paper. It requires patience, precision, and a deep understanding of the subject, and I found that the more I practiced, the more I was able to bring my subjects to life. Over time, I started to specialize in creating portraits, first of pets and then expanding to include persons. I discovered that drawing animals, particularly pets, allowed me to connect with people on a very personal level. Pets are such an important part of many people’s lives, and being able to immortalize them in a portrait that captures their unique personality became a deeply fulfilling aspect of my work. My pet portraits, are some of my most cherished pieces, as they blend technical skill with emotional resonance. In the past year, my artistic journey has taken another exciting turn as I ventured into acrylic painting. I’ve found a new sense of freedom in this medium, enjoying the boldness of the colors and the versatility of the paint. Acrylics have allowed me to explore new styles and forms of expression, and I’ve been thrilled to take on commissioned works where I can bring clients’ visions to life through this medium.”

What inspires you?

“Inspiration for me comes from a variety of sources, and it’s something that has evolved over time as I’ve grown both as an artist and as a person. The works of other artists are also a wellspring of inspiration for me. I enjoy studying the techniques and styles of other artists. Furthermore, I’m deeply inspired by the stories and feedback of the people who commission my work. When someone trusts me to create a piece of art for them, it’s not just a technical task - it’s a collaboration and an honor. Their stories, whether it’s a portrait of a loved one or a beloved pet, provide a deeply personal source of inspiration. The emotions they share with me, their hopes for what the artwork will represent, and the connection they have to the subject all feed into the creative process. These stories infuse my work with meaning and purpose, making each piece a unique reflection of the person who inspired it.

Lastly, the process of creating itself is a significant source of inspiration. There’s a certain magic that happens when I’m in the flow of making art - when time seems to disappear, and it’s just me and the canvas or paper. The act of creating, experimenting with colors, lines, and forms, is deeply fulfilling and continually drives me to explore new ideas and techniques. Each new piece is an opportunity to discover something new about myself, about the world, or about the art form itself.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“In my work, the themes I pursue are deeply intertwined with explorations of identity, the human condition, and the relationship between humanity and the natural world. These themes are often presented through a blend of realism and symbolism, where the boundaries between the real and the imagined are blurred to evoke a deeper emotional response and provoke thought.

A significant theme in my work is the exploration of identity, particularly the concept of duality within individuals. I am fascinated by the idea that each person contains multiple facets - some that are visible to the world and others that are hidden beneath the surface. This duality is often represented through contrasts in my compositions, where different elements coexist and interact to reveal the complexities of the self. I am drawn to the notion that our identities are not static, but rather a dynamic interplay of our experiences, emotions, and inherent traits. Through my art, I aim to capture this fluidity and the tension between the various aspects of who we are.

Another theme that is central to my work is the connection between humanity and the natural world. I find profound inspiration in the beauty and mystery of nature, and I am particularly interested in how it mirrors the human experience. This theme is explored through the inclusion of animals, flora, and other natural elements that are often depicted in close relationship with human figures. These elements serve as both literal and metaphorical extensions of the human subjects, symbolizing emotions, instincts, and the deeper, often primal connections that tie us to the natural world. In doing so, my work reflects on how we are not separate from nature, but rather an integral part of its vast, interconnected web.

Symbolism plays a crucial role in my art, serving as a bridge between the visible world and the unseen forces that shape our lives. I use symbolic elements to convey themes of transformation, mortality, and the passage of time. These symbols are often layered within the work, encouraging viewers to look beyond the surface and consider the deeper meanings that lie beneath. I am particularly interested in how these unseen forces - such as fate, love, and the inevitability of change - manifest in our lives, often in subtle and unexpected ways. My use of symbolism is intended to evoke a sense of mystery and to prompt reflection on the greater forces at play in our existence.

Emotion is a driving force behind my work. I aim to create pieces that resonate on an emotional level, inviting viewers to connect with the work through their own experiences and feelings. The emotional depth of my art is expressed through the careful consideration of color, composition, and expression, all of which are used to evoke specific moods and atmospheres. Whether it is a sense of melancholy, hope, or contemplation, I strive to capture the complexities of human emotion in a way that is both authentic and evocative. This emotional resonance is crucial to the underlying message of my work, which often revolves around the shared human experience and the emotions that unite us all.

At its core, the underlying message in my work is one of embracing the complexity of life and recognizing the interconnectedness of all things. I seek to convey that life is multifaceted, filled with contrasts and contradictions that are not to be resolved, but rather embraced. Through my exploration of identity, the human-nature connection, symbolism, and emotion, I aim to create art that speaks to the rich tapestry of existence. My work encourages viewers to reflect on their own lives, to find meaning in the juxtaposition of seemingly opposing forces, and to appreciate the beauty that arises from the interplay of light and dark, the known and the unknown. In essence, my art is an invitation to delve deeper into the human experience, to explore the nuances of identity, the mysteries of life, and the emotional landscapes that define us. It is about finding connection and meaning in the complexities of existence and recognizing that, despite the challenges and uncertainties, there is beauty and significance in every aspect of our journey.”

How would you describe your work?

“I would describe my work as a fusion of realism and symbolism, where vivid imagery and intricate details come together to tell stories that are both personal and universal. My art often balances on the edge between the seen and the unseen, the real and the imagined, creating a space where viewers can explore deeper layers of meaning beyond the surface. At first glance, my work often presents a sense of realism, with subjects that are meticulously rendered and imbued with a sense of life and presence. However, this realism is not just about depicting the physical world accurately; it’s about capturing the essence of the subjects, whether they are human figures, animals, or elements of nature. Each element in my work is carefully chosen not only for its visual impact but also for its symbolic significance. I infuse my art with symbols that invite viewers to look beyond the obvious and consider the deeper narratives that are being conveyed.

Thematically, my work delves into explorations of identity, the human condition, and our connection to the natural world. I often use contrasts - between light and dark, innocence and experience, or the human and the animalistic - to highlight the complexities and dualities inherent in life. My compositions frequently feature elements of nature, such as animals and plants, which serve as extensions of the human subjects, reflecting emotions, instincts, and the primal forces that influence our lives.

Emotion plays a central role in my work. I strive to create pieces that resonate with viewers on a deep, emotional level, drawing them into the world I’ve created. This is achieved through a careful balance of color, composition, and expression. The moods in my work range from serene and contemplative to intense and dramatic, each piece capturing a specific emotional moment or atmosphere. My use of color is particularly deliberate, as I believe it has the power to evoke powerful emotions and set the tone for the entire piece.

There is often a strong narrative element in my work. Each piece tells a story, sometimes obvious and at other times more subtle, waiting for the viewer to unravel its layers. These stories are not just about the subjects depicted, but about broader themes such as transformation, mortality, and the passage of time. I am deeply interested in the way stories can be told visually, through the interaction of symbols, expressions, and the relationships between the elements on the canvas. My goal is to create art that engages the viewer’s imagination, encouraging them to interpret the story in their own way and find personal meaning in the work.

I would also describe my work as embracing complexity and ambiguity. Life is rarely straightforward, and I aim to reflect this in my art. The interplay between different elements in my work often creates a sense of tension or ambiguity, where the meaning is not immediately clear. I believe this complexity invites viewers to spend more time with each piece, to think and reflect on what they see, and to discover new interpretations each time they revisit the work.

Ultimately, my work is about creating a dialogue - between the artwork and the viewer, between reality and imagination, and between the conscious and unconscious mind. I want my art to evoke questions, emotions, and introspection, leaving space for the viewer to bring their own experiences and perspectives into the interpretation. My hope is that through this dialogue, my work can resonate on a personal level with each viewer, offering them a moment of connection, reflection, or even inspiration. In summary, I would describe my work as a thoughtful blend of realism and symbolism, rich in narrative and emotion, designed to engage both the mind and the heart. It is an invitation to explore the complexities of life, to find meaning in the interplay of contrasting forces, and to appreciate the beauty in both the seen and the unseen.”

Which artists influence you most?

“My artistic influences come from a wide and constantly evolving range of sources rather than from a few specific artists. I don’t have particular favorite artists that I return to repeatedly; instead, I find inspiration by exploring the vast and diverse art community on platforms like Instagram. This approach allows me to discover new and exciting artists all the time, each bringing their unique style, technique, and perspective to the table. The beauty of social media, especially Instagram, is that it provides an endless stream of creativity from around the world. I am drawn to the diversity of artistic expressions I find there - whether it’s someone experimenting with bold colors, intricate line work, or innovative mixed media techniques. Each new artist I come across adds something different to my own creative process, whether it’s a fresh take on a familiar theme or an entirely new approach to composition.

By constantly seeking out new artists and styles, I keep my own work dynamic and evolving. This exposure to such a variety of art helps me to avoid getting stuck in any one style or method, encouraging me to continuously push my own boundaries. I find that this ever-changing pool of influences keeps my work vibrant and allows me to grow as an artist. In essence, my influences are as diverse as the art world itself. I’m inspired by the creativity and innovation I see every day from artists around the globe, and this constant influx of fresh ideas helps me to stay inspired and motivated in my own artistic journey.”

“Normal work isn't for me. I feel anxious because I'm not a people person, and at work, I have to interact with dozens of people daily. I'm more of a lone wolf, comfortable in my own bubble where I can create and embrace my introverted self.”

What is your creative process like?

“My creative process is highly structured and intentional, beginning with a strong emphasis on finding the right theme and subject before I even pick up a brush. I believe that the foundation of any great piece of art lies in having a clear and compelling concept, so I spend a significant amount of time in the initial stages of planning and ideation.

Before I start painting, I need to have a well-defined theme that resonates with me on a deep level. This theme often dictates the mood, message, and overall direction of the piece. I’m very particular about what I choose to paint - each subject must align with the theme in a way that feels authentic and meaningful. This part of the process is where I’m the most strict and selective, as I believe that the subject is the heart of the artwork. If the theme and subject don't fully capture my interest and imagination, I won’t move forward with the piece.

Once I’ve settled on a theme and subject, I immerse myself in research. This could involve gathering visual references, studying related artworks, or even exploring literature and other forms of art that connect with the theme. I like to ensure that I have a deep understanding of the subject matter before I start sketching, as this helps me to create a more nuanced and layered piece. During this phase, I also draw inspiration from the diverse range of artists and styles I encounter, especially through platforms like Instagram, where I constantly discover new and innovative approaches.

With a clear theme and subject in mind, I move on to sketching. This is where I start to visualize how the elements will come together on the canvas. I’m meticulous at this stage, experimenting with different compositions, perspectives, and arrangements until I find one that perfectly encapsulates the concept I want to convey. I see this part of the process as essential to ensuring that the final piece is cohesive and powerful. Often, I’ll create several drafts, refining the details each time, until I’m satisfied that the sketch does justice to the theme and subject.

When I’m finally ready to start painting, I approach the canvas with a clear plan in mind. My strict approach continues here - I pay close attention to every brushstroke, ensuring that the execution aligns with the vision I’ve developed. I’m not one to rush this process; I take my time to ensure that the colors, textures, and details all work together harmoniously. The initial planning allows me to focus entirely on the technical aspects of painting, confident that the conceptual groundwork has been thoroughly laid.

Even after the main painting process is complete, I’m still very particular about the final touches. I step back frequently, evaluating the work from different angles and considering whether it fully meets the original vision. I might spend additional time refining details or adjusting elements to ensure that the finished piece is as close to perfect as possible. This final stage is crucial for me because it’s where I make sure that every aspect of the painting reflects the strict standards I set for myself from the beginning.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“An artist’s role in society is to challenge perceptions, provoke thought, and offer new perspectives. Artists have the unique ability to reflect the times we live in, capturing emotions and experiences that resonate on a deep level. As society evolves, I see the artist's role expanding - becoming more crucial in fostering dialogue on important issues, promoting cultural understanding, and even driving social change. With the rise of digital platforms, artists now have unprecedented opportunities to reach global audiences, making their voices and messages more influential than ever before.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“Yes, I had my first exhibition at Gallery Theodor in Loviisa, Finland, which was a significant milestone in my artistic journey. It was an incredible honor to be approached by the Chairman of the Loviisa Art Association, who reached out to me on Facebook with the invitation to exhibit my work at their gallery. The exhibition ran from March 18th to April 7th, 2024, and it was a truly memorable experience to showcase my art in such a respected venue. The positive reception and the opportunity to connect with art enthusiasts in person were deeply rewarding.”
