Interview

Jasmin Omar

There is a story behind every painting and each story holds a different truth.

With colors and a brush in her hand, there are so many things that Jasmin has found she can say, things she previously had no words for. She believes that colors are the best way to express ourselves – not just by using them but, most importantly, by looking at them.

Life is all about perspective. Abstraction allows us to look deeper, to see with our minds what we cannot see with our eyes, to imagine.

Jasmin views art as a mirror of our soul. A way of connecting. A creation of something completely unique. Her art is her way of connecting with each viewer, to help them discover and explore new sides of their mind. She invites you to get lost in her world of colors!

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I am a self taught artist and scientist. How did my journey in the art world start? This is a question I have asked myself so many times but honestly I don’t remember. Art has always been a part of me. I have always been drawn to art.

As a child I loved to get creative, creating little projects, crafting and painting. It’s just something I found myself doing without knowing why. Creativity has always been my form of self-expression.

In the year 2017, I started to invest more time and energy in my passion and decided to start my professional art journey.

Over the years my art has helped me to truly understand my thoughts, feelings and start the journey of becoming my most authentic self.”

What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?

“Many of my artworks focus on empowering yourself, becoming and living your most authentic truth, nature and embracing your feelings and vulnerability.”

"It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see." — Henry David Thoreau

Which current art world trends are you following?

“I don’t intend on following a specific trend all the time, but a trend I love is fluid-art, the pouring of paint.

Many of my paintings are done using this technique. This technique is one of my favorites because I love how unexpected it is, and how beautifully different colors can flow together in harmony, creating a unique artwork just like a fingerprint.

I like to call it a print of the soul.”

Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?

“Both, there are projects that I plan for months or even years. For example, I started planning some projects this year that I will most probably finish in three years. But there are others projects that I plan in a shorter period, mostly during a week or a month.

Then there are spontaneous artworks that come to me when I have a vision, a random stream of inspiration. These are mostly unplanned and based on a sudden unexpected feeling or story. These artworks I like to create through improvisation without any plans, just diving into it and going with my feelings.”

What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?

“Almost all of my artworks are abstract created with acrylic paint. For the near future I am already planning to experiment with some new materials. One of my favorite techniques is fluid-art as I already said.

There are a few exceptions that are not abstract.

I just love abstract art because of the endless options of interpretation and the complete freedom it gives the viewer to imagine, feel and get lost.”

What does your art mean to you?

“Art is life. Life is art. For me my Art is like breathing. I often get asked why I paint and I never find an answer. It’s simply like breathing, it’s something I just do.

If you look close enough, you find art in every part of your life.”

What’s your favorite artwork and why?

“It’s hard to choose a favorite when there are so many beautiful artworks out there, but one of my absolute favorites is ‘The Starry Night’ by Vincent Van Gogh.

There is something so captivating about this painting – I never get tired of it. The technique, the colors, the whole painting captivates and inspires me every single time.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“In 2021 I participated in the ‘Love my Body’ art exhibition of M.A.D.S. Art gallery in Milan, and later in the ‘Hysterica’ art exhibition of M.A.D.S. Art gallery in Milan and Fuerteventura.”
