Born in Havana, Cuba, Geysel is navigating life without the guidance to explore her aspirations was challenging. Raised in circumstances where opportunities were scarce and familial support was absent, she found solace in learning from friends and other families. Her yearning for freedom and self-expression became a driving force. In 2008, she moved to Ontario, Canada, and like many dreams, she had to put art on the back burner as she settled into her new life, pivoting to pursue studies in esthetics. In 2015, experimenting with various hues, mediums, and techniques, her artistic identity was created.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“My yearning for freedom and self-expression became a driving force. In 2008, I moved to Ontario, Canada, and like many dreams, I had to put art on the back burner as I settled into my new life, pivoting to pursue studies in esthetics. For 16 years, I dedicated myself to this craft by day while nurturing my passion for painting in my studio, which also happened to be my laundry room, at night. In 2015, experimenting with various hues, mediums, and techniques, my artistic identity was created.”

What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?

“My art is a reflection of my inner world, unaffected by external influences or societal concerns. It is a manifestation of emotions and sentiments, a bold form of self-assertion, a liberation to be truly authentic. I express myself trough colours and movements.”

Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?

“Embarking on a fresh canvas fills me with immense excitement. While I may initially envision crafting something extraordinary and captivating, the creative process takes on a life of its own, intertwining with the chosen medium, be it acrylics or inks. As I channel the energy from my subconscious into the tangible realm, the artwork takes shape, guided by each deliberate stroke or movement, until a harmonious equilibrium is achieved. Abstract art, in its enigmatic nature, elicits diverse interpretations, as it reflects the innermost projections of each individual's subconscious.”

Are there any art world trends you are following?

“I don't adhere to current trends. Instead, I draw inspiration from my daily life and, most importantly, my emotions. I prefer to working in my studio when inspiration strikes, allowing my feelings to guide me. I approach a blank canvas with an open mind, letting my ideas develop organically as I work. This process of creation is what shapes my artwork.”

What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?

“I enjoy using my hands to paint because it makes me feel liberated and deeply connected to my art. In the moment, I reach for spatulas, scrapers, large brushes, or anything else that happens to be nearby, allowing my tools to be a spontaneous reflection of my mood and inspiration.”

“Embarking on a fresh canvas fills me with immense excitement.”

What does your art mean to you?

“To me, painting is a way to unveil and share my innermost thoughts. It is a deeply personal experience that sets me free, originating from the core of my being. I paint for the joy it brings, finding pleasure and fulfillment in its ability to broaden my horizons. Through painting, I allow my emotions to flow freely, immersing myself in a unique sense of tranquility. It feels like time stands still, creating a serene atmosphere.”

What’s your favourite artwork and why?

“One of my most cherished paintings is among the first I created when I began my journey in the artworld. This piece, which is now 7 years old, holds a special place in my heart. Unlike other works that I sometimes feel like I need to revisit or revise, this painting feels complete to me. It remains a standout piece in our home decor, adding a special touch to our living space.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“Ocean collection was my most loved series over the past few years. In 2020, I had a solo exhibition show at a local business in Oakville Canada on. The enthusiasm on everyone who loved and followed my work were in disbelieve that I had created so many paintings and they didn't know about it. I was so happy to feel so special and cherished by all of my closest friends, families and clients.”
