Interview

Fritz Bayer

Fritz is a German born artist. Abstract, intuitive, just like chaos itself.

Art, especially painting, brings balance into his life. He currently uses acrylic paint on canvas, mirrors, wood or other painting backgrounds. The use of multiple backgrounds, techniques and colors comes from various interests, his own emotional being, as well as from his constant companion in life: Chaos.

Fritz finds inspiration for his paintings in ordinary life situations, thoughts and emotions. Those thoughts and emotions are reflected within his art. He paints those feelings as chaotic and spontaneously as they come. It might happen that he starts five paintings at the same time, as he never follows just one particular idea or thought.

Fritz rarely has a clear motive in his head when he starts creating: just like the paintings, the idea evolves within the process of creation.

It may happen that he has to put the painting he is currently working on aside when a new feeling or thought comes up, or perhaps at the time it becomes secondary or vanishes completely. It might also occur that sometimes the inspiration finds him again only after several months, which then usually happens in the middle of the night and motivates him to continue to create or finish a painting.

This creative process allows him to call his work "Intuitive Art".

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“My professional background is in the hotel, restaurant and event industry. Except for the regular art education I received in school, with an extra study group, I did not have any professional art education. All that I know, I learned as an autodidact through experimenting.”

What inspires you?

“Life itself - with all the emotions and colors that we experience every day.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“As I mentioned in the previous question, my artworks are inspired by life, so mostly they are a reflection of my emotions I feel from my surroundings.”

What is your creative process like?

“Rarely do I have a finished painting in my mind before I start making new art. Mostly, I am inspired by feelings and thoughts so I first begin by choosing the colors and then I begin painting, usually working on additional paintings in the same creative period. It has also happened more than once that the emotions I feel during a particular artwork flow away, and I interrupt the work, perhaps for several months, until I catch the same emotion again. When I have the feeling a creation is finished, I then sign it to close the process.”

The reflection of feelings and thoughts being lost in space or being pushed aside can be found in Fritz’s paintings.

How would you describe your work?

“Intuitive art inspired by life.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“I guess most people would now expect some grand political talk, but for this, we have the huge creative art of the news and journalism. In my opinion, the most important role is to bring color in the grey everyday, and to touch the feeling and thinking of someone who is seeing the creation. It doesn't need to necessarily be positive emotions or the same thoughts of the artist.”

Which artists influence you most?

“For sure some of the older well known artists influence me on a subconscious level, but consciously I am supported by musicians through their songs that I listen to during the creative process.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“I have been painting for many years, but my life as an exhibiting artist has just started. So I will use this chance to mention that my artwork ‘time worth more than cold’ was chosen for the London Art Biennale 2021.
