Interview

Esther Loria

(1950-2015)

Esther Loria was born in Calcutta, India in 1950. She immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of five. Her journey into the world of art began at the dawn of the 1970’s with a first semester art class at Los Angeles City College. Unfortunately, the professor was quite oppressive and attempted to enforce his own vision of what is art on his students. So, even though, with her natural talent, she had created a few actual masterpieces in that short semester, she did not continue. She did do some poetic writing during the 1980’s, but then in 1990, her fine art and literature burst forth like an explosion. A few years later she took up photography as well.

She defined her purposes in each of her fields of art: On Painting and Sculpture

“For me it's a pure create. It's magic. It's the magic of creating something from nothing. Creative expression. Creative Impressionism™, if you will.”

On Literature and Poetry:

“Writing is a very powerful medium. I use it to express the experience of the intersection of lives and the emotional and spiritual impact of that intersection.... Successful communication is a very high art form, and if the quality of that communication enhances another's life, then I have accomplished my mission.”

On Photography:

“To capture a fleeting image in time for the future. To immortalize the essence of a subject in that moment that will never exist again.”
