Interview #89
Erik Esso
Erik Esso is a young artist who lives and works in Germany. His art is a critical discussion with himself. He says that he is a perfectionist. He catches spontaneous feelings of happiness and try to show them with simplicity, and minimalism.
Could you tell us a little about yourself? What has brought you into the art world?
There was always an interest in art inside of me. But it was kind of hidden until an age my mind got clearer. I was pretty sure that I‘m gonna be a designer until a few years ago, But then I became, rather by accident, the assistant of a painter, who turned into my Mentor. I realized that just working for myself not for the industry, is the only thing that would fulfill me. I just love working by my self, listening to music and being alone.
Tell us about your work. What materials do you use, and where do you draw your inspiration from?
I worked with materials such as rescue blankets, astroturf, asphalt, toilet paper, metal and a lot of other things. Because a usual painting is just not interesting for me anymore. It’s always a huge effort to realize my ideas functionally and it requires experimenting with a lot of materials.
When I was on the Côte d’Azur for a while, it happened by coincidence that I asked myself, why don’t we look at the ground and was so fascinated by its immediacy. I just felt like I needed to do something with it. So I put things out of their ordinary context and object-scout for a new reality. I’m a researcher, I’m searching for new perspectives on things in our life.
“I don’t have and any sketchbooks. I work with the material and then I create a vision of the finished piece and know what to do. The vibe is really important for me.
For me, visuals and sounds go hand in hand. I just love the moment when I get so focused that my work and the music become one.
In my art I just do the stuff I feel”
