Interview

Doraj Jarod

Jarod explores the paradoxes of contemporary society through powerful paintings and sculptures that merge modern symbols with classical influences. His work examines the impact of hyperconnectivity, consumerism, and technology on human relationships and emotions. By addressing universal themes with a deeply personal touch, Jarod creates thought-provoking pieces that invite viewers to reflect on the contradictions of our modern world.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I began my artistic journey in the urban culture of skateboarding, graffiti, and street art. My early experiences were heavily influenced by the vibrant energy of the city, where I immersed myself in the world of bold colors, raw creativity, and unapologetic self-expression. Later, I transitioned from tattooing to painting and sculpting, seeking a space where I could explore ideas without constraints. My studio became my sanctuary - a place where music, art, and freedom coexist to fuel my creativity.”

What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?

“My work explores the contradictions of modern society, focusing on hyperconnectivity, consumerism, and the loss of innocence in a digital age. It critiques our dependence on technology and the societal pressures that distort our humanity. Through symbols like smartphones, luxury items, and distorted classical figures, I reveal the paradox of our progress -advancements that bring both connection and alienation. My goal is to provoke thought and inspire reflection about the world we’ve created.”

Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?

“It’s a combination of both. I often start with a concept or message I want to convey, but the process itself is highly intuitive. As I work, new ideas emerge, leading me to explore unplanned elements that enrich the final piece. I believe this balance of structure and spontaneity keeps my art alive and authentic.”

Are there any art world trends are you following?

“I’m inspired by movements that challenge traditional norms, particularly street art and installations that incorporate interactive or thought-provoking elements. Artists like Banksy and Shepard Fairey resonate with me due to their ability to merge activism with art. However, I strive to create a voice distinct from these influences, focusing on a deeply personal narrative while addressing universal themes.”

What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?

“I work with a diverse range of materials, including wood, epoxy, and acrylics. My technique involves carving, painting, and layering to create textured, multi-dimensional works. For example, my wooden iPhone sculptures are carved and filled with resin to mimic the glossy screens of real devices. Every material I use is carefully chosen to enhance the narrative and emotional impact of the piece.”

What does your art mean to you?

“Art is my way of understanding the world and expressing truths that words cannot capture. It’s a mirror reflecting society’s beauty and flaws, but also a window into my own soul. My art is both a personal catharsis and a call to action for viewers to question their reality.”

What’s your favourite artwork and why?

“One of my most personal works is a piece that depicts a man absorbed in his phone while his young daughter reaches for his attention. This work resonates deeply with me as it reflects moments from my own life, serving as a reminder of the importance of presence and connection. It’s both a self-critique and a commentary on a universal issue.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“I recently held my first exhibition at Galerie Artium in Geneva. It was a private event for an exclusive circle of collectors and art enthusiasts. The response was overwhelming, with attendees expressing deep interest in my work. While I chose not to focus on immediate sales, the exhibition established my presence in the art world and set the stage for future projects in iconic cities like Paris, London, and New York.”
