Interview

Darren Allbutt

Darren is an award-winning sculptor. He draws inspiration from the ocean and the amazing creatures. Through his work he brings attention to the plight of these sea animal's that have suffered from the hands of humanity. He says its all of our responsibilities to protect these special creatures.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I come from a creative family spanning five generations. My grandfather and mother were talented artists so I get that from them. My father was a commercial timber boat builder, so all my woodworking skills came from him. I have always drawn and painted, however I have gravitated to timber sculptures two years ago.”

What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?

“I create these amazing sea creatures to not only put a smile on people's faces but bring attention to their plight. It's all of our responsibilities to protect them.”

Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?

“It happens organically. I see a log and say, ‘Wow that looks a bit like a whale.’ I then start carving the creature allowing it to evolve with very little measurements. There are a few animals I like to carve however I let the log lead the way.”

What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?

“Timber. Mostly fallen trees and recycled timber. It must come from near home and have a story to tell. I use large chainsaws and work down to fine carving tools and sanding disks.”

What does your art mean to you?

“Happiness. I love seeing people's reaction to my work. Putting smiles on their faces is everything to me.”

What’s your favourite artwork and why?

“A famous artist from Sydney Australia, Brett Whitley. His work is so out there however his interpretation of our special home, Australia is amazing.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, Sculpture exhibition. I entered Nancy-May the Baby Humpback and won a special mention (3rd) from the judge. She really connected with people and they loved her dearly. She is now in the gardens at the Lon Retreat Point Lonsdale, Victoria, Australia.”
