Interview

Annkathrin Immler

Annkathrin is a self-taught artist. Her central theme in her work is the influence we have on our surroundings and vice versa. She plays with the colors and shapes of her pictures and incorporates a wide variety of styles in her work. She has had numerous exhibitions including: K4 Nacht in Leutkirch - Group exhibition with over 40 artists (2022); Kunst im Labor in Zurich - International group exhibition (2023); Artmuc in Munich - Contemporary art fair (2023); K4 Nacht in Leutkirch - Group exhibition and a commissioned public artwork on happiness (2023); Exhibition in Isny's Schiller metal workshop (2023); and a solo exhibition in Munich's Lavolé practice (2023); among others.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“My background is quite unconventional for an artist. I started as a manager overseeing construction sites, where I worked closely with architects. This collaboration ignited my passion for drawing, initially in perspective, and later expanded to animals and people. My artistic journey took a significant leap when I experimented with painting a deer on canvas and shared it on Instagram. The immediate interest and inquiries about purchasing it encouraged me to embrace art by transitioning to a full-time artist. Since mid-2023, I've been nurturing my talent in a studio in Munich, developing my art without formal academic training in the field.”

What inspires you?

“Inspiration for me is everywhere. I believe that our sense of beauty is continuously shaped by the world around us - from the intricate designs of street art and architecture to the natural beauty of our surroundings and the bold statements of fashion. I make it a point to observe and absorb these diverse influences, including music, which often translates into visual narratives in my art.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“My art revolves around thematic series, each with its own narrative and purpose. "Facing Extinction" reflects on the environmental impacts of human activity, while "Empowerment" is a tribute to the strength of women. In "Holiday," I explore serene and dreamlike destinations. My personal favorite, "Masterpieces," is a series of collage-style works that represent significant people and moments in my life, each a masterpiece in its own right.”

How would you describe your work?

“My artwork is a fusion of vivid colors, engaging brightness, and a sense of approachability and optimism. I believe that art should be a source of joy and a catalyst for smiles, conveying not just images but also the emotions and stories behind them.”

Which artists influence you most?

“My artistic journey has been shaped by a variety of influences. As a child, I was captivated by the works of Michelangelo and Roy Lichtenstein. Over time, my tastes evolved to appreciate other Pop Art figures, the expressive Egon Schiele, and the provocative Banksy. Today, I draw inspiration from the artists within my own community.”

What is your creative process like?

“My creative process is quite intuitive. It begins with a seed of an idea that I nurture and refine until I'm satisfied with the outcome. I find night-time to be the most conducive for creativity, and once I'm immersed in my work, I enter a state of flow where everything else fades away, leaving only the canvas, colors, and the music that accompanies my creative sessions.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“I believe that an artist's role is twofold: to bring joy and to provoke thought. In our performance-driven society, art serves as a bridge to our emotions, a medium through which we can explore and express feelings. As artists, we have the responsibility to engage with societal issues, offering viewers an emotional gateway to understanding and connecting with these topics. In challenging times, art's role in providing hope and a sense of lightness becomes even more crucial.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“My focus has primarily been on creating art, which has led me to participate in various regional exhibitions. A highlight was my participation in Artmuc in Munich in 2023. Looking ahead, I am excited about upcoming opportunities to showcase my work at national and international fairs and competitions in 2024.”
