Alexa Heming

Alexa Heming is a Canadian jewellery designer and silver and gold Smith creating refined, nature-inspired jewellery and sculptural objects. Founder of Alexa Heming Jewellery, she works in recycled gold and silver and designed KEEP, a sculptural vessel for cherished pieces.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“My artistic journey began at KSA, Kootenay Studio of Arts in Nelson, BC, where I studied silversmithing and design and developed my foundation in metalwork. Over nearly a decade, I’ve grown that craft into Alexa Heming Jewellery, creating refined, nature-inspired pieces shaped by the landscapes and organic forms around me. Living in the mountains, nature is an everyday source of inspiration. I love adventuring through these landscapes with my family and friends, and motherhood has deeply shaped the way I see beauty, memory, nature and the things we choose to treasure. These ideas have found their way into my designs in a very personal way. As my practice has evolved, I’ve expanded beyond jewellery through the design of my KEEP vessels. Sculptural objects created to hold and protect cherished pieces. These beautiful jewellery photographs were captured by my cousin, Charlotte @lotalove, who helped bring this chapter of my work to life.”

What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?

“My work is about noticing and holding onto what matters. Inspired by nature, motherhood, and life in the mountains, I create pieces that speak to connection, memory, wonder, and the beauty found in everyday moments. I want my work to feel like a reminder that we need to slow down, look closer, and treasure the people, places, and moments we carry with us.”

Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?

“Yes and no. I often begin intuitively, allowing an idea, feeling, or form to come to me naturally. Once that intuition clicks, I take the time to thoughtfully design and refine the piece. So while the initial spark is spontaneous, the final work is intentional and considered.”

Are there any art world trends are you following?

“No, not really. I’m much more influenced by the beauty around me. the natural settings, mountains, organic forms, and everyday life. I prefer to follow my own intuition and let those surroundings shape my work.”

What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?

“My process begins with intuition, a feeling, form, or moment that sparks an idea. I refine that spark through thoughtful design, using silversmithing, goldsmithing, and lost-wax casting. I let the organic nature of the material guide the final form.”

What does your art mean to you?

“Art, to me, is a way of expressing feelings that are sometimes difficult to put into words. It allows me to capture the people, places, and moments that mean the most to me such like the feeling I have when I wear the heirloom ring passed down from my mom, and the memories and connection it carries.”
