Interview

Abda Fayyaz

Abda Fayyaz is a seasoned artist with over 10 years of dedicated art practice, showcasing her talent in nearly 20 exhibitions within just the past three years. She is a Pakistani national and holds a degree in Banking and Finance with over 15 years of experience in brand development and strategy management. Though originally from Pakistan, she has spent most of her life in the UAE, primarily in Dubai. Her artistic journey began at the young age of 4. Abda is an award-winning self-taught artist, where the work is the reflection of her understanding of the universe and the constant changes and transformation that take place within and around us. From abstract paintings to calligraphy, the artworks represent a fusion of modern art and traditional techniques. Her artworks are prominently featured in the prestigious Abu Dhabi Executive Office Collection, having been selected three consecutive years by the discerning curators of DIFC Art Nights. A distinctive aspect of Abda's artistry is her proud incorporation of the script 'Allah' in all her works. Through this, she endeavours to infuse a contemporary aesthetic into the ancient tradition of Arabic calligraphy, showcasing her unique mission in the realm of artistic expression.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I grew up in Pakistan and always felt a deep connection with nature and colour, even as a child. I trained in finance and built a professional career in brand strategy, but my artistic journey began much earlier, at the age of four. Art was always my constant, my sanctuary. Even though I’m self-taught, this practice has been with me for as long as I can remember. It’s not something I do, it’s part of who I am.”

What inspires you?

“The universe. The unseen. The delicate balance of everything around us. I find beauty in transformation, how something as simple as a shadow or a shifting tide can hold so much meaning. My faith is a deep well of inspiration. I often work with the Arabic script ‘Allah’, not just as text, but as energy, a visual rhythm that connects everything.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“My core message is one of interconnectedness. That we are all part of a greater whole, people, nature, the cosmos. My work often returns to themes like unity, spiritual reflection, and healing. I want people to pause, to feel, and to remember that even a single line, a dot, a gesture- belongs.”

How would you describe your work?

“Intuitive, meditative, and layered. My art isn’t meant to be loud; it’s about presence. I don’t approach a canvas with a plan. The process unfolds like a quiet conversation, with texture, light, and feeling. I work mostly in acrylics, often in black, silver, or blue, using repetition and subtle variations that hold both silence and intensity.”

Which artists influence you most?

“It’s difficult to name just a few. I’m inspired by artists who embrace the unseen, who explore meaning beyond form. Islamic calligraphy and traditional craftsmanship have had a profound impact on me. But I also find inspiration in poetry, in nature, and even in ancient scripts.”

“Intuitive, meditative, and layered. My art isn’t meant to be loud; it’s about presence.”

What is your creative process like?

“It’s deeply intuitive. I don’t sketch or plan beforehand. I enter the studio in silence, grounding myself in the moment, and then I let the work emerge. It feels less like creation and more like remembering something that already exists. Each piece comes from a place of stillness and connection.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“An artist is a mirror, a translator of things we often can’t say out loud. In a world that’s constantly moving and overflowing with noise, art can create spaces for pause, for feeling, for reflection, for healing. I believe artists today play an important part in bringing humanity back into focus. While they may not carry the responsibility to change the world alone, their work can contribute meaningfully to the shifts we need, as a form of emotional truth, awareness, and connection. We can’t afford to disconnect.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“My work has been part of DIFC Art Nights for several consecutive years, which I deeply value for its resonance with a diverse and engaged audience. I’ve also had the privilege of exhibiting at the Capital Club in DIFC, including the Perspectives Exhibition, and currently have work on view at both the Capital Club and Maraya Art Centre in Sharjah. The inclusion of my work in the Abu Dhabi Executive Office Collection has been a great honour. Each exhibition feels like a conversation, and I cherish every opportunity to connect with viewers and help them engage with my artwork.”
