Cesar Vianna - artworks.

This year starts with great news for Cesar Vianna: his new web site is online! At this new web site, we can discover all his current and past exhibitions.

Art has been present in Cesar’s life since he was very young. His oldest memories are from his childhood, watching cartoons, like The Flintstones, The Jetsons and he was doing sketches of these characters.

“I always loved cartoons and comics, at the beginning they inspired me a lot to do my sketches. I also remember that in my house and in my grandparents' house, there were reproductions of impressionist paintings (Van Gogh and Renoir). I was in love with the painting "Young Girls at the Piano." A few years ago, the painting "Basket of apples" by Cezanne awoke this dormant passion.”

Cesar started to explore and research new technics, new styles, new ways to represent and to express himself. Among his multiple skills, the most important is illustration. Cesar has skills in photography, acrylic painting, watercolor, pastel, screen printing, lithography, wash-off, scratchboard, wood burning and some non conventional materials; such as eye shadows, for example. His work is very eclectic. In his journey, he explores different techniques, both conventional and unconventional. His principal goal is illustration. Cesar draws with pencils, brushes, wood burners and other tools. He looks to create an impact on the public with his art.

As a citizen of two countries, he doesn’t have any specific aesthetic. Cesar’s work is at times realistic, at others surreal and abstract. He seeks the perfection of images from the classical past combined with the attitude and abstraction of contemporary arts. The nature and complexity of human forms are his sources of inspiration. He uses vibrant colors and strong contrasts on minimalist representations.

At this moment, Cesar is taking advantage of the door that the 2020 pandemics opened: he is discovering models from different parts of the world. This movement has allowed him to explore ethnic details, and at the same time, cultural characteristics.

“The world is very rich in differences, and I thought : why not incorporate them into my work? Also, I have used body language in my works (small facial expressions, hand and arm movements) to express emotions in my works. The differences that exist in the world are only superficial. Body language and emotions are universal (after all, we are all human).”

Cesar’s artistic practice is simple: since he was a child he represents what he lives through or what he sees. His sources of inspiration are the small activities or small elements of his daily life. These elements merge with his imagination and as a result, he has his works. Cesar likes to explore realism from an ancient artist. He doesn’t want to be a Renaissance painter, but with his practice, he looks for detail; he looks for a good representation of a texture or a material. Cesar likes to combine materials and/or techniques. People describe his work as meticulous.

“Art for me is an exhaust valve. My time in my studio is my time for reflection and contemplation. It is a moment of mindfulness meditation, where I will let go of the problems and all stress from reality, where I let my imagination and/or feelings guide my practice. It is a moment without demands and without judgment, different from my professional daily life.”

Cesar is a graphic designer. He work with projects where he has to please a client and at the same time obtain a result, that is, he is constantly charged and judged. In the case of his art, he is free from these judgments. He has the freedom to express himself and this is his only objective.

Cesar has always liked art a lot, and for him, it's liberating! His first step in becoming an artist was letting go of judgment. His first step was to let his childhood spirit revive and not let himself be influenced by his vision as a designer. “The moment I separated my "artist self" from my "professional self" and left the artist free to express himself, was the beginning of my life as an artist.”

The quarantine had a great impact on Cesar as an artist. When it started, he had time to explore his art, to start some old projects and new ones. He could not have imagined at that period, that he would have two artworks published; he would be invited to join the International Association of Visual Arts (IAVA), he would win a sketch contest in his town and he would have some exposition projects as a consequence! Because of all the challenges that he participated in, Cesar tried and learned to do and to use new things. For example: to use non conventional material, as tea, to do an artwork. It was a great moment for Cesar, it was a period that he used to invest in himself and in his creativity. Before 2020, he was looking for beauty. He made sketches and art pieces looking for the perfect aesthetic. At the same time, Cesar used his photography camera to make paintings with light and represent the beauty of nature. After 2020, he realized the world was really dark, almost miserable because of the situation. He canalized all negative energy at that moment and started to explore and research.

“Pandemics opened a new door for me, the world's door. I started to know people from different parts of the planet and inspired my artwork on those people. All characters I had in my 2020, 2021 and 2022 production are inspired by real people from different countries. Ordinary people with real problems that never thought one day could be in an art piece. I draw what I see, I draw real people. I use the materials that feel right at the moment, conventional or not conventional. Since 2020, my artworks are exhibited in different countries . I always look for new places to show my art.”
