Interview

 Virginia Cabral

Virginia was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in May 1994. She graduated from Universidad ORT Uruguay in interior designer and visual art, and works as an architect.

Virginia’s passion for art started when she was a child. She developed her skill by studying different techniques at various schools, such as Fundación Iturria and Taller ArteClub.

Virginia focuses on creating joyful works for the decoration of spaces. She believes that choosing good colors is very important when creating because of their combinations, the different intensities, and the use of opposite colors. Each piece must transmit a lot of energy and vitality.

Virginia has exhibited her work in Spain and China.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I started painting when I was 17 years old; today, I’m almost 28 years old. At school we had art lessons, where they made us explore the world by painting using different techniques and colors. It was the only subject I really enjoyed. I realized that I liked painting and it made me feel good. I started going to art classes 6 years ago, where I practiced different styles until I found mine. I am still constantly learning and growing as an artist, and I plan to keep improving my range of skills with time.”

What inspires you most?

“Nature greatly inspires me—the ocean and plants. I’m also inspired by how I feel when I create an artwork. I let it flow through me as inspiration without thinking too much about it, just feeling it.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“I love painting waves, representing the different movements they have during the various seasons of the year, and in different climates—calm waves and raging waves when there is a storm. I also create abstract art. I choose opposite colors and start with curved lines that cross the entire canvas. After that, I get carried away and follow the curved lines using different tones.”

How would you describe your work?

“First I get inspired by looking at photographs or watching something in real life. I pay attention to colors and textures. I choose the colors, then I let it be and enjoy it.

I use strong colors in my paintings to convey life and joy.”

“The point of being an artist is painting what you feel, and then enjoying the painting.”

Which artists influence you most?

“Andy Warhol inspires me a lot. I love the colors he used. Claude Monet with his impressionist paintings had lots of spots where if you look at the painting very carefully, you notice the details and how much work it took him to paint it.”

What is your creative process like?

“I start by choosing the colors I want to use. I consider the opposite colors—like blue with orange— and use different tones of each. Then I simply let myself get carried away.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“The role of an artist has been important since a long time ago. We see in history important artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and many more. The artists allow the observers to see another vision of life. We bring another perspective.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“I exhibited in Madrid, Spain in a cultural Latin American center, and also in Yiwu, Zheinjang, China in the Uruguayan Pavilion.

You can view the exhibitions here and here.”
