Interview

Tali Gutman

Tali is a versatile visual artist, a devoted mother, a researcher by profession, and, at her core, a child at heart. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, she embarked on a creative journey at a young age, immersing herself in visual arts during her formative years and dancing from the moment she could walk. Her pursuit of artistic expression led her to complete her undergraduate degree in Dance at the Victorian College of the Arts, where her fascination with costumes and wearable art ignited. However, Tali's journey took a scientific turn, leading her to earn a Master's in Public Health and a Ph.D., honing her observational and deductive skills. In parallel, she embarked on a profound journey of self-discovery, utilizing her art as a therapeutic means to manifest her personal growth.

The birth of her child in 2021 marked a pivotal moment as she decided to pivot once more and channel her creativity into her art practice, carving out time amidst her responsibilities as a mother. Tali's unique perspective blends her inquisitive scientific mind with her wild and imaginative inner child, straddling the realms of the tangible and the fantastical. Her vision for her evolving art practice is to fuse the worlds of art, science, and play seamlessly. She is passionately committed to sustainability and environmental consciousness in her work, choosing materials thoughtfully and incorporating upcycling and repurposing techniques. At the heart of Tali's art is a poignant message: the magic we experience as children often fades as we grow into adulthood. Through her work, she chronicles her observations of the world, her journey to self-understanding, and the profound connection between the two. As she delves deeper into self-discovery and embraces her ADHD brain and empathetic heart, her art becomes a medium to rekindle the enchantment in everyday life. With a palette of joy, whimsy, color, adventure, and play, she invites viewers to rediscover their own magic. Among her body of work, the "A Girl and Her Bunny" series holds a special place in her heart. This series embarks on enchanting adventures through magical portals to landscapes inspired by real and imagined places. It celebrates the boundless creativity of the human mind, a testament to her ongoing reclamation of her inner child—a series of love letters to that spirited, youthful self. Tali's art is a testament to the enduring magic that resides within us all. Her hope is that her creations will not only rekindle the spark of wonder in your own heart but also inspire you to reconnect with your own magic, just as she has done on her artistic journey.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“My journey in the art world mirrors my journey of self re-discovery and reclamation. As a young child, I would spend hours with my trusty Crayola 64 pack diligently learning to colour inside the lines, despite my otherwise chaotic energy. I think even then it served as a mediation. Even though I continued to decorate anything I could, as I ‘grew up’ I began to feel the pressures and expectations of the world and who it wanted me to be. Colouring inside the lines transformed from a meditation to mantra – stay inside the box, hide your weird, hide your eccentric, hide your truest nature and expression. The world won’t ‘get’ you. But as hard as I tried, I have always been pulled back into a creative world. While I excelled academically in high school I decided to study dance full time. I opened a wellness studio in my early twenties but felt uninspired. I searched and searched - I went back to study public health, I travelled, I got my PhD, I had a baby. But I was still searching. All these things I was trying to be for the world - all these paths I explored, they were like detours on a road leading me back to my true passion - art. Despite my academic achievements and ventures in various fields, I couldn't ignore the calling of my inner artist. It was as if my creativity refused to be stifled any longer. The turning point in my journey came when working with my mentor on maternity leave; she posed a question to me: “what if it is not impossible to live your dream of being an artist? What if you can actually live your wildest dreams?” It was at this moment that I decided to embrace my artistic identity wholeheartedly. I returned to the world of visual arts with a newfound determination to express my true self and let my creativity flow freely. Through my art, I have found a way to merge my diverse background and life experiences into a unique and authentic artistic voice. Today, I am committed to breaking free from the confines of the box that society tried to fit me into and letting my truest nature and expression shine through my artwork. It's a journey of self-discovery, reclamation, and unapologetic self-expression.”

What inspires you?

“Many things in life ignite my creative spirit. Nature is a boundless source of inspiration, with its intricate details and grand vistas, from magical dandelions to majestic mountains. The unfiltered curiosity and unbridled creativity of children serve as a constant reminder to approach my art with fresh, childlike wonder. Dreams, with their rich symbolism and emotional depth, often provide the narrative and imagery that find their way into my creations. The cultural ceremonies, art, textiles, and dress of diverse world cultures fascinate me, forming a tapestry of human heritage, weaving stories into every thread and brushstroke. The myths, legends, and beliefs of First Nations and pagan cultures and how they made sense of their worlds, grounded in natural rhythms and elements are a big source of inspiration. I'm also deeply drawn to the spiritual and shamanic traditions of the Andean region, which resonate with their connection to nature and the spiritual world. All of these influences converge in my art, reflecting my personal journey and inviting exploration of life's complexities and beauty through a vivid and imaginative lens.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

“My art is a vibrant fusion of themes that reflect my personal journey and my observations of the world. It serves as a visual diary of my growth, healing, and exploration of the human experience. Central to my work are themes of personal development and self-love, encouraging viewers to embrace their unique qualities and celebrate their individuality. I'm also deeply drawn to the concepts of connection and oneness, highlighting the interconnectedness of all things. Through my art, I hope to inspire a sense of adventure, urging others to discover their own magic and keep that spark alive in the modern world. I find solace in the beauty of nature, which I aim to capture in my work, and I use colour and shape to convey emotions and meaning. In the midst of life's chaos, creating art becomes a meditative act, bringing order and harmony. Ultimately, my art serves as a call for viewers to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery, acceptance, and connection with the world around them. It's a celebration of life's beauty, complexity, the wonder of life's experiences in both our inner and outside worlds, and the magic that resides within each of us.”

“Through my art, I hope to inspire a sense of adventure, urging others to discover their own magic and keep that spark alive.”

How would you describe your work?

“My work is characterized by its colourful, playful, and whimsical nature. I find joy and inspiration in the vibrant palette of life, and this is reflected in my choice of colours and the way I use them to convey emotions and narratives. I intentionally choose not limit myself with just one style or medium – I paint with acrylics/mixed media, I build hanging sculptures and mobiles, I create eccentric headpieces and costumes and I hope to be able to create large scale sculptures in the future. I believe that art should be a source of delight and wonder, and I strive to infuse my creations with a sense of playfulness that invites viewers to explore and engage with the imagery. Whether it's through the use of vivid hues, imaginative compositions, or whimsical subject matter, I aim to transport my audience to a world where imagination knows no bounds. My art often celebrates the beauty of the everyday and the extraordinary found in the mundane. It's an invitation to embrace the childlike wonder that resides within all of us and to see the world through a fresh, unfiltered lens. While my work is undeniably fun and lighthearted, it also carries deeper layers of meaning and symbolism that invite viewers to delve beneath the surface. It's a balance between the carefree and the contemplative, where each piece tells a unique story and invites personal interpretation. In essence, my art is a celebration of life's vibrancy, a testament to the power of imagination, and a reminder that even in the most whimsical of moments, there can be profound beauty and meaning.”

Which artists influence you most?

“I draw inspiration from a diverse array of artists who share a common thread of fearlessly embracing their childlike wonder, bold creativity, and unbridled imagination. One of my absolute favourite artists is Yayoi Kusama. Her work, characterized by its vibrant colours, repetitive patterns, and immersive installations, captivates me. Kusama's ability to transport viewers into whimsical and surreal worlds resonates deeply with my own artistic philosophy. Her fearless exploration of the infinite and her dedication to her craft are truly inspiring. In addition to Kusama, I find myself drawn to street artists like Banksy. Banksy's thought-provoking and often subversive works challenge traditional notions of art, where it can be found, and how we engage with it. His ability to use public spaces as a canvas for social commentary and artistic expression has had a profound impact on the art world and how we perceive art in everyday life.

Another source of inspiration for me comes from the awe-inspiring sculptures of Burning Man. The massive, ephemeral artworks that grace the playa at this annual event are a testament to the power of collaboration, creativity, and the temporary nature of art. These sculptures not only push the boundaries of scale and imagination but also remind us of the impermanence of our creations, which is a concept I find both humbling and profound. I'm also deeply influenced by traditional artisans and craftspeople, wearable art and the artists who transform the human body into a canvas for self-expression. It fascinates me that how we choose to adorn ourselves can be deeply spiritual, connect us with the rhythms of the land, showcase the spoils of our triumphs. It can also be a purely joyful self-expression, that brings light, colour and intrigue to those around us. In essence, my artistic influences encompass a wide spectrum of creators who challenge conventions, celebrate the imaginative spirit, and push the boundaries of where and how art can be experienced. They inspire me to take risks, experiment with new ideas, and continue my journey of self-discovery through my art.”

What is your creative process like?

“My creative process is a beautifully chaotic journey, much like the dance of a hummingbird. My offerings are diverse, from abstract landscapes to weird and wonderful wearable pieces. My studio is a place of complete freedom of my mind and heart, where I am guided by how big my smile is. My creative process is driven by my interests and attention of the day. At any given moment, I find myself juggling multiple projects, each at a different stage of development and which I choose to work on depends how I am feeling in that moment. Ideas tend to come to me in unexpected moments—whether I'm engaged in another task, daydreaming, or even during my dreams themselves. I've learned to embrace these flashes of inspiration and add them to my ever-growing list of plans for new works. This spontaneous aspect of my process keeps me constantly engaged and excited about what's next. The genesis of a piece can take various forms. Sometimes, I have a clear and vivid image in my mind that I'm eager to bring to life. Other times, I embark on a piece with only a vague idea, allowing the creative process to unfold organically as I work. This mix of planned and spontaneous creation keeps my artistic practice fresh and full of surprises.

Each artwork has its own timeline. Some pieces burst forth in a matter of days, as if they can't wait to escape my imagination. Others, however, patiently gestate for years, gradually evolving until they feel complete. Some creations are one-time ideas that find their way into physical existence and then I'm done with them. Others become ongoing explorations, evolving through different interpretations and colour palettes. Interestingly, the apparent chaos of my creative process is rarely visible on the canvas. It's almost as if my hands serve as translators, taking the mess from my mind and transforming it into neatly organized blocks of colour. The act of 'colouring inside the lines' or creating strong lines and shapes helps me bring order to my internal world and find a sense of balance and harmony. One of the aspects I truly relish in my process is the act of mixing my own colours. Rarely do I use a colour straight out of the bottle (except for silver and gold). The process of blending pigments to create unique colour palettes adds an element of energy and individuality to my work. It's a tactile and intuitive process that allows me to explore the full spectrum of emotions and moods through colour. In essence, my creative process is a dynamic dance between chaos and order, spontaneity and planning, and the tangible and the abstract. It's a reflection of my inner world, where imagination knows no bounds, and where the act of creation is a source of endless fascination and self-discovery.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“Artists are, in many ways, like fortune tellers and visionaries. We possess the unique ability to envision possibilities that others may not see, and then we bring those visions to life in the physical world. Our work often starts on the fringes of society, operating outside the mainstream, until it gradually catches the attention of a wider audience. In society, artists have a crucial role as catalysts for change. We challenge the status quo, question conventions, and push boundaries. We have the power to make people uncomfortable by forcing them to confront their preconceived notions and biases. Our creations serve as mirrors that reflect both the light and shadows of our collective consciousness. Artists are also bearers of truth and awareness. We use our craft to shed light on social, political, and cultural issues that demand attention. Through our work, we spark conversations, raise awareness, and inspire action. We celebrate the beauty of the human experience and the world around us, even when it's uncomfortable or unconventional.

As society evolves, so does the role of artists. In today's digital age, technology has expanded our reach and transformed the way we create, share, and engage with art. The internet and social media platforms provide us with global canvases to share our work and connect with audiences worldwide. This shift has made art more accessible and democratized the creative process. Moreover, globalization has enriched the diversity of artistic influences, leading to a more inclusive and interconnected art world. Artists from different cultures and backgrounds now collaborate, blending their unique perspectives and techniques to create truly global art forms. This evolution is breaking down barriers and fostering a deeper appreciation for the richness of human creativity. In the future, I believe artists will continue to play a vital role in shaping society. Our ability to envision and manifest change will become even more essential as we grapple with complex global challenges. As technology advances, we'll find new ways to leverage it to create innovative and immersive artistic experiences that resonate with people on a profound level. In essence, the artist's role in society is one of constant evolution, adaptation, and expansion. We are the torchbearers of creativity, pushing the boundaries of what is possible and inviting others to join us on a journey of exploration, reflection, and transformation.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“In May 2023, I had the privilege of showcasing my work at the 'Real Refuse' exhibit, a platform created to celebrate artists not selected to be hung by the Sulman Prize. It was at this pivotal moment that I proudly introduced 'Life is But a Dream,' a cherished painting from my 'A Girl and Her Bunny' series. What touched my heart even more than receiving the People's Choice Award was the fact that the artwork resonated deeply with the youngest visitors to the gallery. The joy and wonder it brought to the children reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of art and the importance of making it accessible to all generations. Art should be a source of inspiration and delight for everyone, regardless of age, and it is my mission to continue sharing the magic of creativity with young and old alike.”
