Interview

Sophia Perkins

Sophia Perkins is 27 years old and she is an abstract painter. She has had a keen eye for art and artistic expression for as long as she can remember, but she has only been painting for a few years. Her work expands on color theory and implements spontaneous abstraction. Sophia is also an author, and all of her creativity is self-taught.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“Occasionally, I paint landscape and nature scenes, but I primarily delve my artistic creativity and passion into the abstract realm. For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in art. From a young age, I had always been drawn to and captivated by color. I really began to paint when I was about 23 years old. Once I started to paint, I could not stop! It was my newfound passion and a gift I realized I had deep within me. Ever since that age, I continued to experiment with ideas and different color palettes on the canvas - a non-stop need to create.”

What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?

“I would say that my work aims to test the limits of my own creativity. In this, I explore the notion that creativity truly is endless. I can often be found experimenting with a wide array of diverse color palettes and schemes, which allows me to explore new ideas directly on the canvas. My artwork also aims to show that color theory can surpass traditional color combinations deemed tasteful. In other words, I aim to show that it is possible to incorporate many colors together to create a unified and balanced composition. I want my artwork to evoke emotion in the viewer, and I want my artwork to show that color is integral to evoking these emotions.”

Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?

“The majority of my work is spontaneous. I choose colors that feel ‘right’ and appropriate, in the very moment I choose to paint. I let colors do the talking and evolution on the canvas, and my technique in abstraction is spontaneous, as well. I usually will lay out a few painting materials beside me, such as brushes and mixed media applications, and I will choose how I incorporate them in my piece in the very moment I am painting. In my spontaneous approach, I can often create results that tell a story in the final product.”

“The majority of my work is spontaneous.”

Are there any art world trends are you following?

“No, I do not follow any specific artistic trends. Again, my work is very spontaneous. I will also add that my inspiration is - undeniably - color and how different colors flow together. This is my personal twist on color theory, independent of any trends or ideas evolving and present in the art world.”

What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?

“I would describe my process as spontaneous abstractions. I utilize solely acrylic paints, as well as acrylic inks and pigments. When it comes to how I apply paint on the canvas, I get creative - not only do I use paintbrushes, but I also use foam brushes, sponges, and even my own hands.”

What does your art mean to you?

“To me, art is direct self-expression. Art is how I have developed a sense of purpose in this world, and I believe art provides an immersive distraction from the chaos and clutter in day to day life. It is my sanctuary, my home, and my calling.”

What’s your favourite artwork and why?

“My absolute favorite artwork is ‘The Starry Night’ by Vincent Van Gogh! I believe this artwork is my favorite due to the simplicity of the composition, yet intricate detailing in the portrayed sky. Its usage of color is remarkable and very balanced.”
