Interview

Roezetta Crampton

Roezetta Crampton is a fibre artist with an insatiable appetite for adventure, creativity, and all things bold. With a serious dislike for boring walls, she’s always been drawn to the unconventional. Her passport boasts stamps from 32 countries, and her 23-year career in jewelry design has taken her on countless journeys. In her free time, Roezetta revels in exploring cities, uncovering hidden gems, and marveling at extraordinary design. From the stunning boutique hotels of Bangkok to the sprawling Chatuchak Market's art section, and the serene rice fields of Bali, she’s found inspiration in the most unexpected places. Growing up on the beautiful island of Fiji instilled in me a love for raw, uninhibited life and a desire to push beyond boundaries.

As a thrill-seeker, she’s always yearned for something new, something bold, and something that would reignite her passion. That's when she stumbled upon tufting – a tactile, expressive, and captivating art form that combines fibre, texture, and colour to create mesmerizing wall hangings. She was immediately hooked! With her first tufting gun in hand, Roezetta spent a year mastering the fundamentals through trial and error. But she didn't stop there; she pursued a short course to refine her skills and push the boundaries of fibre art. Her quirky, self-taught techniques remain the stars of the show, infusing her art with a distinctive fusion of fluid curves, electric colours, and infectious energy. Her art reflects her free-spirited, slightly mischievous personality – a true reflection of her love for adventure, creativity, and bold self-expression. Roezetta is on a mission to bring fibre art to the masses, one whimsical wall hanging at a time. Her art invites viewers to touch, explore, and connect with the tactile world of fibre. As she continues to evolve as an artist, she’s driven by a singular mission: to introduce fibre art to the masses, transforming homes, offices, and public spaces with its beauty, texture, and emotional resonance. Through fibre art, she aims to inspire others to embrace their uniqueness, challenge conventional norms, and find joy in the creative process.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I grew up on the beautiful island of Fiji, where I developed a love for raw, uninhibited life and a desire to push beyond boundaries. With a 23-year career in jewellery design, I've had the opportunity to travel to 32 countries, exploring cities, uncovering hidden gems, and marvelling at extraordinary design. My travels have inspired me with diverse cultures, textures, and colours. I discovered tufting, a tactile and expressive art form that combines fibre, texture, and colour, and I was immediately hooked. I spent a year mastering the fundamentals of tufting through trial and error, and then later pursued a short 3 hour course to refine my skills and push the boundaries of fibre art. Through this process, I developed quirky, self-taught techniques that infuse my art with a distinctive fusion of fluid curves, electric colours, and infectious energy.”

What does your work aim to say? Does it comment on any current social or political issues?

“The aim of my artwork is to create immersive, tactile experiences that inspire emotional connection, spark curiosity, and celebrate the beauty of fibre art.”

Do you plan your work in advance, or is it improvisation?

“While my artwork begins with a plan, my creative spirit often takes over, driving me to experiment, improvise, and push boundaries. I love to mix it up, trying new things, and embracing the unexpected. This organic process often leads to surprising and exciting results, transforming my initial idea into a completely new and improved piece of art that's truly one-of-a-kind.”

Are there any art world trends you are following?

“While my artistic vision is deeply personal, my travels to over 32 countries have undoubtedly infused my work with a rich tapestry of global inspiration, textures, and colours. I draw inspiration from within, allowing my own unique experiences, emotions, and intuition to guide my creative process, rather than following external art trends.”

What process, materials and techniques do you use to create your artwork?

“My artistic process is rooted in self-directed experimentation, as I continually push the boundaries of fibre art through intuitive techniques and innovative methods, honed through trial and error.”

“My artistic journey is fueled by curiosity and experimentation, as I continually push the boundaries of fibre art through intuitive exploration and innovative techniques, refined through a process of trial, error, and creative discovery.”

What’s your favourite artwork and why?

“My most treasured artwork is my latest masterpiece, where I've finally mastered and perfected the techniques I've been experimenting with and refining through self-directed learning. It's a piece that has surpassed my expectations, bringing my artistic dreams to life.”

Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“I’m thrilled to announce that my artistic journey has taken a exciting leap with my first-ever exhibition at the prestigious Swell Sculpture Small Art Prize on the Gold Coast. Being selected to showcase my work alongside talented artists is an honor, and I'm eager to share my recently completed first art work collection with the world. This milestone marks a significant moment in my artistic career, and I'm looking forward to this incredible opportunity.”
