What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I am an artist whose journey has been deeply influenced by the natural beauty of my upbringing in Crozet, Virginia, nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Surrounded by picturesque landscapes and the allure of nature, I found early inspiration that ignited my passion of art. My grandfather, Austin Cyrus Fitzgerald, and his legacy as a portrait artist has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on my own artist journey. Through his work and passion for capturing the essence of individuals on canvas, has instilled in me a love for portraiture and a deep appreciation for the art form. In hone of my grandfather`s legacy, I add another layer of depth and significance to my artistic expression.
My own portrait creations become a continuation of a timeless artistic tradition, bridging the past with the present and touching the hearts of those who view my work. Drawing and painting have been woven into the fabric of my life since a young age, becoming my consistent companion and creative outlet. As I grew older, I embarked on a new chapter, moving to New York City and embracing the corporate world. Despite the busy urban lifestyle, my artistic spirit persisted, and I continued to nurture my creativity through drawings that reflected my diverse experiences. However, it was the enchanting city of Montreal that opened the floodgates of my artistic expression.
In 2009, I found myself fully immersed in the vibrant arts scene of the city, and this ignited a transformative period in my artistic journey. With newfound zeal, I embarked on a prolific artistic endeavor, creating nearly one hundred paintings since then. My diverse portfolio showcases the multifaceted nature of my portfolio. My landscapes, animals, flowers and portraits are the main focus of my artwork. Among my creations, you will find a captivating array of portraits that delve into the worlds of celebrities, capturing their essence with striking procession. From renowned figures to beloved icons, my celebrity portraits reflect my ability to infuse life into each subject.
Notably, I have also immortalized my mother, Dixie, in a tender portrait, conveying the depth of our connection through my brushstrokes. Now, at the age of 66, I have come full circle, returning to my cherished hometown of Crozet, Virginia. In this serene and inspirational setting, I plan to devote myself entirely to my artwork, nurturing my creativity, and sharing my passion with the world.”

What inspires you?

“As an artist, I draw inspiration from the enchanting wonders of the natural world, infusing my artwork with a sense of awe and reverence for its splendor. Through my unique approach, I skillfully breathe life into animals, landscapes, flowers and portraiture, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the essence of each subject. Of course, as mentioned before my grandfather was a major influence on me and shows in each piece of my artwork.”

“Through my art, I offer a glimpse into the magic that surrounds us, celebrating the beauty, grace, and wonder that define our natural world. My style of abstract realism is a testament to the profound connection between art and nature, a captivating journey that evokes a sense of awe and inspiration in those fortunate enough to behold my creations. With each piece, I strive to share my artistic vision. Nature`s beauty, cultural nuances, and personal experiences are my wellsprings of inspiration.”

“Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin have profoundly influenced my journey as an artist, particularly in the realm of abstract realism. Their distinct styles and groundbreaking approaches to art have left an indelible mark on my creative process.
Vincent van Gogh`s vibrant and emotive works have always fascinated me. His bold use of color and expressive brushwork evoke deep emotions, capturing the essence of his subjects and surroundings. I am drawn to his ability to infuse everyday scenes with a sense of raw emotion and intense energy. His iconic painting, `Starry Night,` with its swirling night sky and luminous stars, resonates with me on a personal level, inspiring me to explore the interplay of light, color and emotion in my own art.
On the other hand, Paul Gauguin`s artistic exploration of exotic landscapes and cultures has had a profound impact on my approach to storytelling within my artwork. His ability to create dreamlike and otherworldly scenes, often inspired by his travels to distant lands, instills a sense of wonder and intrigue in me. “In my creative process, I find solace and inspiration in my small studio nestled in Crozet, Virginia, a place that has become the heart of my artistic endeavors. Having worked in my studios in New York City and Montreal, I have come to appreciate the serene environment of my current workspace, which allows me to fully immerse myself in my art.
As an artist specializing in abstract realism, canvas has become my preferred medium, and I primarily work with acrylic paints. The versatility of acrylics enables me to create intricate details and delicate brushstrokes, essential in conveying the emotions and narratives that define my paintings. This medium`s fast-drying nature also encourages spontaneity and allows me to build layers of color and texture, giving my artwork a sense of depth and vibrancy.
My creative process is a dynamic interplay of emotions, ideas, and technique. I often begin by drawing inspiration from personal experiences, nature, or the world around me. Exploring themes of tranquility and romance, I let my imagination take the lead, allowing ideas to flow freely. Through my unique perspective and creative expression, I have the power to influence and inspire others, fostering a deeper understanding of the human experience. Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?

“I am hesitant to call my two exhibits in Montreal for the month of December 2016 and two days in September 2022 noteworthy, but several art critics expressed to me that these exhibits indeed holds significance and merits celebration. As an artist, every opportunity to showcase my work and connect with an audience is a noteworthy milestone in my creative journey. I was further reminded, the fact that I had my own exhibit in a vibrant city like Montreal is commendable. Exhibitions offer artists a chance to step into the spotlight, sharing their unique artistic vision with the world. My decision to hold the exhibit involved considerable effort in planning, organizing, and promoting the event, making it a testament to my dedication and commitment to my work. The inspiration I derived from interacting with different people during the exhibit is a testament to the power of art in fostering connections and evoking emotions. Witnessing their pure interest in my work was immensely gratifying, reaffirming that my art has the ability to resonate with others and touch their hearts. Additionally, selling two pieces of art during the exhibit is a fantastic achievement. It demonstrates not only the appeal of my artwork to others, but also the value they see in my creative expression. Making a sale during an exhibition is an exciting validation of my talent and it was a boost to my confidence as an artist.
