What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“Living in New York for over 20 years can provide a unique and rich perspective on the world of art, thanks to the city's vibrant cultural scene. Starting a journey in the art world often begins with exposure to the myriad of art forms and influences that a metropolis like New York has to offer. From world-renowned museums and galleries to street art and performances, each experience can deepen one's appreciation and understanding of art. Many individuals find themselves participating in art classes, attending gallery openings, and networking with other artists and art lovers. Such interactions often lead to personal artistic endeavors or collaborations, fostering a career or lifelong passion in the arts. The city itself, with its dynamic and diverse environment, serves as both muse and marketplace for an artist.”
What inspires you?
“What inspires me are the people and messages that challenge and encourage thinking outside the box. Such influences provoke deep reflection on personal aspirations, direction, and place in the world. Engaging with innovative thinkers and boundary-pushing ideas sparks creativity and drives a sense of purpose, helping to navigate the vast landscape of possibilities and carve out a unique path. This inspiration is crucial in fostering personal and professional growth, motivating continuous exploration and self-discovery.”
What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?
“During the early stages of my career, I worked in film for a major TV network. While in the editing room, I witnessed how footage and stills transformed into powerful photo images, each telling a story and conveying a theme that resonated deeply. This experience ignited my pursuit of themes that explore human connection, identity, and the interplay between reality and perception. My work aims to evoke emotions and provoke thought, often carrying an underlying message about the complexities of life, beauty in imperfections, and the significance of shared experiences.
The underlying message in my work revolves around the truth-telling power of imagery. As a photographer, I often step into the role of a director, setting the stage for the subjects I photograph. I place them in carefully crafted scenarios, inviting them to act and play parts within these constructed realities. The moment I cue "action," the camera transcends its mechanical nature and becomes a vibrant storyteller. This approach allows me to capture and convey deep truths and emotions, making each image a narrative of genuine, unscripted moments shaped by guided spontaneity.”
How would you describe your work?
“My creative process is deeply rooted in continuous growth and evolution. I immerse myself in research and regularly attend New York exhibits to stimulate and refresh my creative thinking. This approach ensures that my work is always evolving, distinguishing my current projects from past works. I strive to ensure that each new piece reflects a forward movement in my artistic journey, marking clear progress and change from what I have previously created. This cycle of learning, creation, and reflection forms the core of my creative methodology.”
Which artists influence you most?
“The artists who influence me the most include directors Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Christopher Nolan for their unique narrative styles and visual storytelling. In the realm of photography, I draw significant inspiration from Annie Leibovitz's intimate portraits, Steve McCurry's evocative human-focused scenes, and Sebastião Salgado's deep, often stark portrayals of human life and environmental conditions. These artists have profoundly shaped my perspective and approach in both film and photography.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?
“An artist's role in society is to push boundaries and capture the essence of our cultural and societal moments. I believe that the primary duty of an artist is to create work that speaks for itself - work that stands as a testament to the thoughts, emotions, and messages it aims to convey. Once created, art should stand independently, allowing its audience to engage with it directly. This role is evolving as society becomes more interconnected and digital, providing artists with new platforms and mediums to express their visions and challenge societal norms. This evolution expands the influence of art, enabling it to reach broader audiences and play a more pivotal role in societal discourse.”
Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?
“One of my most noteworthy exhibitions featured a series titled "City Reflections," a collection of black and white images that captured the essence of New York City. This exhibition was pivotal as it significantly broadened my artistic reach and demonstrated my capability to elevate my work to a new level. The stark contrasts and intricate details of the city's architecture and its inhabitants resonated deeply with viewers, allowing me to break through my previous creative boundaries. This exhibition not only highlighted my love for New York as a dynamic backdrop but also marked a significant turning point in my career, pushing me towards more ambitious projects and collaborations. Unfortunately, there are no online links available to this exhibition, but it received favorable reviews in local art circles and has been a staple in my portfolio presentations.”
