Interview
Natalie Callwood
Natalie Callwood is a Canadian based visual artist who works from her studio in Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada. She creates intuitive, abstract paintings which explore color, emotion, and nature.
Natalie’s practice is about slowing down, observing, and bringing a quiet contemplation and attention to the present moment in time. Her colorful paintings are inspired by the present moment, but also the pure joy of playing with paints and papers.
Natalie explores the notion that art, just like nature, can positively affect our wellbeing and alleviate stress and anxiety. Being creative is therapeutic and plays a big part in mental health. Creativity has helped Natalie through a lot of difficult times in her own life. Spending any small amount of time in nature releases a sense of calm, happiness, clarity and peacefulness that gives her energy and inspiration in her art practice.
Natalie’s intention is to inspire positive feelings and enhance wellbeing through her art. Her paintings are a celebration of life and the beauty of the world, bringing happiness and hope to the observer.
What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“I was born and raised in Switzerland, and as a child, I was always doodling and crafting. I lived with my grandparents, who encouraged me to be creative, especially my grandfather who was an artist in his own right. Sketching and wood sculpting were two of his many talents. So it was always in the cards that I would become some kind of artisan.
After finishing public school, I started an apprenticeship as a ceramic painter (yes, that was an occupation back then!) After my diploma, I decided to pursue a different path. I wound up in Canada where I met my husband, got married and raised three children who are now grown up. During this time, I got back to my art practice and back into ceramics, even owning a little pottery business for a while.
Eventually, I focused on abstract painting. I experimented with different techniques, from fluid art, alcohol inks, encaustic and resin art, until I fell in love with mixed media and collage. Over the last 4 years, I have become more serious, mostly with painting in acrylics and various mixed media techniques. I even started my own YouTube Channel.”
What inspires you?
“I get inspired by nature. I love landscapes and flowers. Other artists, present and past, are a big inspiration for me as well.”
What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?
“I'm obsessed with florals and nature, especially landscapes. The painting puts you in a serration timeframe, forgetting the world around you. It's like a time machine, so to speak.”

How would you describe your work?
“I describe my work as semi abstract, bright, cheerful and hopeful.”
Which artists influence you most?
“There are so many. Picasso, Monet, Matisse, Van Gogh; all the old masters, really.”
“Mixed media is such a great way to recycle discarded household items like magazines, newspaper and cardboard. I get to help the planet one art piece at a time.”
What is your creative process like?
“My art is mostly impulsive. I get inspired and then go for it. I'm very impatient, so I don't use sketchbooks much. When a painting doesn't work for me, I just paint over it. It's only paint, after all.”
What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?
“Artists are very important. It’s a sign of the times we live in; a documentation for future generations. Also, art is everywhere. Without artists, we wouldn’t have a lot of our modern conveniences, art and design.”
