Interview
Minal Morarji
Minal, an artist of Indian origin born and raised in Kenya, embodies the rich cultural tapestry that shaped her upbringing. While pursuing a formal career in Pharmacy, Minal's passion for painting persisted, driving her to utilize exhibitions as a means to support underprivileged communities. An inner awakening prompted her to transition back to art full-time, igniting a quest to nurture her creativity. Her paintings serve as windows into her life in Kenya, reflecting her journey as an Indian woman, mother, and daughter amidst the embrace of nature. Through her travels, Minal realized the universal struggles faced by women across continents, leading her to explore themes of intersectionality in her art. Minal draws inspiration from the boundless beauty of nature, encompassing not only women but also the breathtaking flora, fauna, and landscapes.
Cultural fusion is evident in her work, with African motifs and vibrant hairstyles interwoven with the essence of traditions. Flowers symbolize personal growth in Minal's art, mirroring the delicate yet resilient nature of life's journey. Each brushstroke becomes a vessel for women to express their emotions and desires, portraying the essence of motherhood, womanhood, and the spirit of nature itself. Minal is a spiritual soul, just like her art is a spiritual journey expressing life. Like a wand in the hand of a great conductor, the stroke of the brushes, intertwined with deep tropical colours are like music for her canvas. Throughout her career, Minal has participated in numerous art competitions and exhibitions.
What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“I am a self-taught visual artist from Kenya, and I have been painting for as long as I can remember. Growing up in the heart of Africa's wilderness, I have always felt a deep connection to nature and wildlife. From a young age, I engaged in art exhibitions with the mission of supporting the less fortunate, which has profoundly shaped my life's journey.”
What inspires you?
“My inspiration comes from the nature I grew up with, my personal experiences, and the diverse cultures I've had the privilege to connect with, among other sources. I consider this talent a blessing from Almighty God, and I am committed to using it to support underprivileged communities around me. This not only motivates me to keep creating art but also profoundly influences the art I create.”
What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?
“Art is a reflection of my experiences and emotions, shaped by the circumstances surrounding each particular collection. Yet, one constant remains: nature is an omnipresent theme in my work. My art is inspired by the beauty found in the world around us, and I believe that beauty truly lies in the eye of the beholder. Each piece I create carries a unique message—one of upliftment, resilience, and faith. My intention is to encourage viewers to embrace their inner strength and to stand tall like warriors in the face of life's challenges. In a world often fraught with uncertainty, I aim to remind others of the power of belief, both in themselves and in a higher guiding force. Ultimately, art is not just about aesthetics; it is a conduit for hope and inspiration, resonating deeply with those who take a moment to look beyond.”
How would you describe your work?
“I would like to convey that my artistic style parallels abstract expressionism, serving as a medium through which I explore my inner dialogues related to life, nature, femininity, spirituality, and more.”
Which artists influence you most?
“A number of artists like Henri Matisee and Elaine de Kooning to name a few.”
“Art is a reflection of my experiences and emotions, shaped by the circumstances surrounding each particular collection.”
What is your creative process like?
“The approach I take varies depending on the subject, but generally, I begin with a sketch and then incorporate a diverse array of materials such as jute, spray paints, markers, and inks. Afterward, I work with acrylics and complete the piece with oil paints. I have a penchant for employing bold, vibrant colors. I love it!”
What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?
“The role of an artist in society is diverse; they act as advocates, innovators, emotional connectors, cultural commentators, and cultural heritage preservers. As society evolves, so does the artist's role. With the advent of digital technology, their global reach has expanded, and we are blessed to benefit from this.”
Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?
“Since 1999, I’ve showcased my work in numerous exhibitions, the latest being in Dubai, entitled ‘IN BLOOM.’ This exhibition celebrated the idea that all women harbor hidden potential and dreams, ripe for flourishing at different moments in their lives. It inspires women to grow into their true selves and to nurture their desires without hesitation. Much like a vibrant garden where each flower blossoms uniquely, women too unveil their beauty and strength in their own perfect timing.”
