What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“I started as a visual artist when I created the book covers for my last two books, which were exhibited in several galleries. Encouraged by the gallery owners, I began to create more art. From the age of seven, I received private lessons in music and drama. I learned to play classical guitar, dabbled in acting, and taught myself to play drums. By the age of 15, I joined a popular new wave band called Ballet Mecanique, securing my first record contract. We released three albums and performed across Scandinavia. However, I stepped away from music at 20 when I became a father. In the following years, I focused on family life, became an autism specialist, and founded a record label, releasing 30 albums from various Scandinavian artists in the '90s.”
What inspires you?
“What inspires me is the creation of art and expressions that do not exist yet, but which still provide a sense of calm and reassurance. I am also deeply inspired by other talented artists, both historical and contemporary. My usual routine when I have free time is to read biographies about other artists, learning about their work processes and lifestyles. Additionally, I travel to places where significant historical events have occurred. I spend as much time as possible in the south of France, often working on revisions to my works or texts. Being there always brings about an improvement in my work.”
What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?
“Yes, there is always some hidden message or commentary I hope the viewer understands by themselves when looking at my work. However, I am by no means a preachy or corrective artist. I am also not the type who is constantly seeking to critique contemporary society. My primary aim is to contribute something that has not been seen before and hopefully enrich the viewer.”
How would you describe your work?
“I would describe my work as a constant journey of soul-searching and continuous movement and innovation. It is also driven by a desire for renewal and transformation.”
Which artists influence you most?
“I am greatly influenced by all the new artists I exhibit with; each of them inspires me in their own way. Additionally, the artists I follow on social media contribute significantly to my inspiration. I am particularly interested in contemporary art because I believe life should be lived forwards, and the same goes for art. It is the art being created here and now that fascinates me, not the old masters. The world evolves so quickly, and focusing on past artists does not interest me.”
“What inspires me is the creation of art and expressions that do not exist yet, but which still provide a sense of calm and reassurance.”
What is your creative process like?
“My creative process varies. Typically, I start by drawing a rough sketch on paper, which I then work to realize. Recently, my works have involved photographs I have taken. I use the photograph as a canvas - though not a blank one - instead of starting from scratch. I either work directly on the photograph or process it digitally, where I draw, paint, or build a collage. I have also recently begun working with iron and glass sculptures, following a similar approach: creating a sketch on paper before starting the actual work. My processes can differ greatly depending on what I am creating.”
What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?
“For me, my role is quite clear, and I have emphasized this whenever asked. I aim to entertain viewers in one way or another by creating something they haven't seen before, providing them with a meaningful and often beautiful experience. So far, I believe I have been successful in this mission. I am not here to spark debates on political issues. My primary role is to bring together people with diverse viewpoints. If my work can bring them together, then my mission is accomplished.”
Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?
“I had recent exhibitions this year at Gallery Capriarte in Venice, Casa del art Palma, Anda kulova Dubai Boomer gallery London 2024, Roma art event Flyer gallery Rome, Basel art week Basel and Zurich 6.0 Zurich Artboxy.”
