Interview
Maja Kerin
Maja Kerin is an award-winning artist known for her unique painting photography style, creating emotion-filled abstract artworks.
Maja’s work is greatly inspired by nature and cityscapes. The nature-influenced work comes from her roots growing up in Slovenia. And then there’s the other love, the love for London.
Having lived in London for 13 years, Maja is currently based in Monaco.
What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“I’ve been honing my skills in abstract photography for the past several years. Originally a portrait photographer, I blended my photography skills with my spiritual growth journey, bringing two passions together.
It all started one day when I tried to experiment with the blurry photo captures and felt more connected to those images than the perfectly sharp photos I’d taken. I realized there’s much more to tell with an abstract photo than with a perfect image. I really like the fact that with the abstract art, I can evoke feelings which can be interpreted differently by each viewer.
The blurry, imperfect photography gives me space to capture the vibrations I feel around me. I often say that everything is energy. Everything around us moves and vibrates all the time, and I like to capture that flow.”
What inspires you most?
“I find inspiration in nature and in vibrant cities. Nature calms me down, and big cities inspire me. I moved to London in my early twenties and lived there for 13 years. The heartbeat of this city shaped my personality and my work.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?
“I always create colorful artworks. With color, I create feelings and moods. Color is more than a visitor experience. It’s everywhere you look, and even in the places you don’t look. You delight in its marvels consciously and subconsciously.
Color therapy and healing—chromotherapy—is a type of holistic healing using the visible spectrum of light and color to affect a person’s mood and physical or mental health. Each color falls into a specific frequency and vibration, which many believe contributes to specific properties that can be used to affect the energy and frequencies within our bodies.”
How would you describe your work?
“My artworks are uplifting and colorful. As color can affect the fundamental sense of self and is considered to be a healing tool, my photography takes the viewer on a journey of wellbeing, joy and inner peace.”
“My favourite quote is by Wasily Kandinsky:
‘Color is a power which directly influences the soul.’”
Which artists influence you most?
“Mark Rothko and Andy Warhol have influenced my work. I find Rothko’s artworks relaxing and can get lost in them for hours, and Warhol’s colorful art is truly unique and fun.”
What is your creative process like?
“My artistic process starts with the story I want to tell, and continues with the camera painting. All of my works are created within the camera and only cropped or color corrected in post production.”
What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?
“Artists’ role in society is really important. We give the viewer freedom of thought and real feeling. A good artwork is worth a thousand words, versus needing thousands of words to explain it.”
Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?
“All exhibitions are just as important, and my focus is to show my work internationally. So far I’ve exhibited in Italy, Monte-Carlo, London, Chicago, and Paris.”
