Interview

Krystina Raelynn

Raelynn was born on June 23, in Greensboro, NC, and grew up in Cedar Rapids, IA and Auburn, WA then Norman OK. She started a murals business then eventually landed in Charlotte, NC where she currently runs photorealistic workshops through the year. With artistic talent running in her family, it was not surprising when she showed substantial promise as a very young child.

What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?

“I’ve been doing art since I was very young and accomplished the beautiful 5 legged cat at 4.5 years old.”

What inspires you?

“The beauty of the world around me and most especially people the unique beauty each of us possess.”

What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?

Feminine energy and wiles seem to be where I find most of my inspiration for a piece.”

How would you describe your work?

“As an exercise in virtual construction of an image portraying the reality and complexity of each individual or object I’ve chosen.”

Which artists influence you most?

“I can think of one and she’s everything to me. Marissa Oosterlee; every time, I try to emulate her techniques the best I can. She’s amazing.”

What is your creative process like?

“I spend my time looking through models and high res images to include when constructing the elements in each painting, I then run the crude images through photoshop or AI on their way to becoming my official reference photo that I will ultimately paint from. It is through this phase I make final changes and substitutions on the fly.”

What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?

“It is a unique role as it can be virtually nothing or it can push the limits of culture in society if used in certain ways and gains traction thus finding wide and popular distribution among the elite and the powerful. I honestly don’t see it evolving much from what it is, nor do I see it becoming any less important. It will always be necessary and sought after but I feel we tend to evolve with culture.”
