What is your background and how did you start your journey in the art world?
“I embarked on my creative journey at a young age, passionately experimenting with various forms of expression. Drawing, painting, and carving became my outlets, and I eagerly used materials like pencils, chalk, and even crushed flowers to create unique colours. My mother, a gifted dressmaker, inspired me immensely; I often sketched our finished outfits while she was busy cutting fabric and sewing. Frequent visits to the Melbourne Museum, art galleries, parks, gardens, the zoo, and the beach with my parents sparked my artistic imagination. I vividly remember sitting quietly, captivated by a talented family friend painting with oils. The texture, scent, and flow of the paints enchanted me, igniting a desire for oil paints and canvases that persisted through birthdays and Christmases. In school, I faced a pivotal choice between art and science, and, much to my art teacher’s disappointment, opted for the latter. I later befriended an accomplished artist who lived nearby; her oil and watercolour masterpieces rekindled my passion for artistry and inspired me to dream. While pursuing higher education in Biology, Anthropology, Prehistory, and Archaeology, life grew busier with marriage and family. Yet, as my daughter began to draw, my artistic spirit blossomed anew. Balancing my career teaching science to secondary students, I ventured into ceramics, mosaics, and experimental art techniques, participating in local exhibitions, including the prestigious Camberwell Art Show. In 1992, I was honoured to become a member of the Victorian Artists Society. My commitment to fostering artistic communities is reflected in my extensive involvement in various organizations.”
What inspires you?
“I find inspiration in the beauty of nature, the rhythms of music, and the experiences gained from travel. Everyday life, emotions, literature, and the stories of others also fuel my creativity. My dreams often serve as a wellspring of ideas. Additionally, I draw significant inspiration from renowned artists such as Van Gogh, Monet, Withers and others, whose works encourage me to explore, experiment, and push the boundaries of my own creativity. Together, these diverse sources enrich my artistic expression and ignite my passion for creating.”
What themes do you pursue? Is there an underlying message in your work?
“Art is an incredibly powerful and therapeutic medium that touches our souls and speaks to each of us in unique ways. My creative journey revolves around experimentation and thinking outside the box, actively pushing the boundaries of traditional practices. I aim to create art that is creative and individualistic, often employing techniques other than the conventional paintbrush. My work seeks to connect my emotions and surroundings with the melodies of music and the essence of my dreams, conveying messages of peace, harmony, and joy. I hope to inspire viewers to delve deeper into themselves, encouraging them to listen to their inner voice - a guiding force that can lead to healing and self-discovery. When you engage with my art, I want you to feel mesmerized and intrigued. Each piece is designed to resonate with energy and celebrate colour, inviting exploration and reflection. Every artwork tells a story, rich with layers that beckon viewers to look deeper. Ultimately, I believe that art serves as a pathway to finding purpose and inner peace, enriching our lives and fostering a greater understanding of ourselves and the world around us.”
How would you describe your work?
“I would describe my work as a vibrant exploration of emotion and experience, where each piece serves as a unique narrative woven from the threads of nature, music, and personal journey. My art transcends traditional boundaries through innovative techniques, moving away from the conventional paintbrush to embrace a more diverse array of mediums for self-expression. Each creation reflects a celebration of colour and energy, inviting viewers to engage with the work on a deeper level. I strive to evoke feelings of peace, harmony, and joy, encouraging introspection and personal reflection. My pieces are not merely visual experiences; they are invitations to embark on a journey within oneself, promoting healing and self-discovery. In essence, my art is a synthesis of influences that resonate intimately, urging viewers to listen to their inner voice and explore their own narratives. Through my work, I aim to create an atmosphere of intrigue and wonder, turning each artwork into a catalyst for connection and transformation.”
Which artists influence you most?
“The artists who have influenced me most include a diverse range of visionary creators, each of whom has left an indelible mark on the art world and my own artistic philosophy. Vincent van Gogh's emotive brushwork and passion for colour inspire me to infuse my own work with deep emotion. Claude Monet’s mastery of light and atmosphere encourages me to explore the nuances of environment and perception. Pablo Picasso's ability to break conventions and redefine form challenges me to think outside the box, while Jackson Pollock’s dynamic approach to abstraction inspires my desire to experiment with movement and energy in my art. Frida Kahlo’s poignant self-portraits remind me of the power of personal narrative and vulnerability, encouraging authenticity in my own expression.”
“My art transcends traditional boundaries through innovative techniques, moving away from the conventional paintbrush to embrace a more diverse array of mediums for self-expression.”
What is your creative process like?
“My creative process is an intuitive and fluid journey that often begins with a spark of inspiration from nature, music, my dreams or personal experience. I start by immersing myself in the moment, allowing my emotions and thoughts to guide me. This initial phase often involves picturing the painting in my head and sometimes sketching or jotting down ideas, as I seek to capture the essence of what resonates with me at that time. Once I have a concrete concept, I delve into experimentation with different mediums, often moving away from the traditional paintbrush to utilize unconventional tools and techniques. This exploratory phase is crucial, as it allows me to break free from preconceived notions and discover new methods of expression. The act of creating becomes a meditative experience, where I lose myself in the process, letting my intuition dictate the direction of the piece. I embrace spontaneity and often make spontaneous decisions that deviate from my initial plan, allowing the artwork to evolve organically. Collaboration and feedback also play important roles in my creative process. Engaging with other artists and sharing ideas can catalyze new directions and insights that enrich my work. Ultimately, my creative process is a blend of structured exploration and free expression, leading to pieces that encapsulate my unique perspective while inviting viewers to embark on their own journey of discovery.”
What is an artist’s role in society and how do you see that evolving?
“An artist’s role in society is multifaceted and deeply significant; we serve as both mirrors and catalysts, reflecting the world around us while also challenging perceptions and inspiring change. Artists have the unique ability to distill complex emotions, thoughts, and cultural narratives into visual language, making experiences accessible to a broader audience. Through our work, we can provoke dialogue and encourage introspection, pushing society to confront uncomfortable truths, explore new ideas, and embrace diversity. As I see it, the role of the artist is evolving in tandem with the changing landscape of society. With the rise of technology and digital media, artists now have unprecedented platforms to share their work and connect with diverse audiences around the globe. This democratization of art allows for a greater variety of voices and perspectives to be heard, offering opportunities for marginalized communities to express their narratives and experiences. Moreover, in a world increasingly grappling with issues such as climate change, social justice, and mental health, artists are called upon to address these urgent themes, using their creativity to advocate for awareness and action. Art becomes a tool for activism, uniting people in a shared experience and fostering empathy. As we move forward, I believe the artist’s role will continue to evolve, encompassing collaboration with other disciplines - such as science, technology, and community organizing - to create multidisciplinary works that resonate on multiple levels. This evolving role speaks to the endurance of art as a vital force in society, driving cultural progress and healing while remaining a powerful means of personal and collective expression.”
Have you had any noteworthy exhibitions you'd like to share?
“I’ve been fortunate to participate in several noteworthy exhibitions throughout my career, both in group shows and solo exhibitions, which have helped shape my artistic journey. Among co-exhibitions, I was part of the ‘Camberwell Art Show’ and exhibited at various exhibitions through the ‘Victorian Artists Society’, both of which provided immense exposure and opportunities for engagement with fellow artists and art enthusiasts. Participating in various art shows in the ‘Heidelberg Artists Society’ and at the ‘Banyule Arts & Culture Art’ Exhibition at 275Loft Gallery allowed me to connect with the local art community, while the ‘Banyule Open Studios Art Exhibition’ at 275Loft Gallery, offered a unique insight into the creative processes of other artists' works. The ‘Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show’ allowed for an exploration of art and nature, a theme that resonates deeply with me.
My most recent co-exhibition this October 2024, will be at 461 Gallery in South Yarra hosted by Spacenow, which I'm excited to share with the community. Regarding solo exhibitions, I had the honour of showcasing my work at ‘Argyle on the Park’ in Maroochydore, Queensland. This experience was particularly meaningful as it allowed me to curate my vision and connect more intimately with the audience, sharing the narratives and emotions behind each piece. Each of these exhibitions has not only been a platform for showcasing my artwork but has also served as a valuable opportunity for growth, learning, and collaboration within the vibrant art community. I look forward to more exhibitions in the future, where I can continue to share my artistic journey and connect with others through the universal language of art.”
